Answer

Qualitative Methods Questions

Question 1: Selection of Phenomenological inquiry, ethnography, and grounded theory study.

  1. The passage through menarche among Haitian refugees.

Ethnography would suffice to address this problem. This is centered on the study being specified among Haitian refugees who share a common cultural pattern. In ethnography, the cultures, beliefs, or language are evaluated for a given population (Polit & Beck, 2017).

  1. The process of coping among AIDS patients

Grounded theory research would profoundly address this topic. This is based on the coping aspect among the AIDS patients being described as a process. The information obtained would be used to develop a theory or framework.

  1. The experience of having a child with Leukemia

The phenomenological inquiry is best suited to address this topic. This is centered on the phenomenology explaining the lived experience of a phenomenon which in this case is having a child with Leukemia.

  1. Rituals relating to dying among nursing home residents

Ethnography is best suited to address this research. In ethnography, it entails studying beliefs and languages, patterns, and language (Polit & Beck, 2017). Rituals are shared cultures and beliefs among nursing home residents thus prompting the use of ethnography.

  1. The experience of waiting for service in a hospital emergency

This topic would sufficiently be addressed using phenomenological inquiry. This is centered on the experience aspect being evaluated for the waiting phenomenon in the emergency department. Notably, the waiting aspect is an encounter among all individuals in this department

  1. Decision-making processes among nurses regarding do-not-resuscitate orders.

Grounded theory study would be the best approach for this topic. The rationale is that decision making is a process and understanding how nurses make their choices on following the order may be used to develop a framework or theory.

Question 2: Qualitative Self-Report Methods

  1. What are the coping strategies of parents whose child has a brain tumour?

In this problem, coping strategies are responses to a particular experience. Phenomenological inquiry would sufficiently respond to the study while self-report method would involve an interview with unstructured interviews to establish the different coping strategies as experiences for parents with a child that has brain tumor.

  1. How do nurses in the emergency departments make decisions about their activities?

The decision making is a process thus ground theory research would be the best approach. The self-report method would involve semi-structured interview. These questions are informed by the literature regarding the decision-making process. However, the responses should be open to allow for diverse responses.

  1. What are the health beliefs and practices of Filipino immigrants in the United States?

The practices and beliefs make the study ethnographic. Self-reported method for use in this problem would be an online survey with semi-structured questions to establish each individual’s personal experiences. The method would aim at establishing shared concepts among the immigrants from various parts in the United States.

  1. What is it like to experience having a family member undergo open heart surgery?

This study is phenomenological and to establish the experiences of these family members, an interview that uses unstructured questions would be sufficient. This is based on explaining the experience of having a family member undergoing surgery. Unstructured interview allows the respondents to share their unique encounters.
