Sustainability in marketing finds its roots in the history of social and economic evolution. Climate change was one of the negative issues of the 20th century with the role human activity plays in fueling it, the potential range of impacts on the individual, societal and environmental welfare creating a bone of contention. The rise of climate change issue has necessitated a change of production and products to ones that have a minimal or favorable climatic impact. Although sustainability marketing is not a walk in the part, the focus should be on key principles of global environmentalism, the need for natural resource preservation, the equity distribution of benefits and costs of economic development, and the intergenerational advantage it offers by fulfilling the needs of the present and future generations.
Sustainability development can take three approaches. The first approach is the status quo-oriented approach which focuses on maintaining the lifestyle in practice and keeping it from social and environmental mishaps. The second approach is reform-oriented which entails adjusting the current practices to focus on development and consumption and production systems. A third approach is a transformation-oriented approach that focuses on growing a holistically sustainable economy and society.
Sustainable development benefits organizations by enhancing the hiring of the best talent, facilitating easier financing and lower risks increase market share and revenue and reducing spending on commercial sites. Additionally, sustainable development helps minimize manufacturing expenses, optimize employee productivity, and increase top talent retention.
Therefore, like sustainable development, sustainability marketing should strive to go beyond the modern marketing principles that facilitate the exchange of products and services to managing customer relationships with an emphasis on value delivery. As they strive to achieve the economic well-being of the respective organizations, marketing sustainability also delves into the planet’s social and environmental health.
