Reflection 5 – Professional Development

Activity Statements and Reflection Questions

  1. Apply leadership principles and decision making in the provision of quality nursing care and healthcare team coordination.

Tell me at least 1 example from your practicum that meets the above activity statement.

How did you see your leader meet the above statement?

During a mid – month meeting held to review and assign more work, some nurses were adamant in picking up more assignments while raising understaffing issues, hoping they would be solved. Knowing the issue to be current, the nurse leader decided to apply a relationship style to help assign work. The nurse leader involved convincing, encouraging, and motivating strategies to woo the nurses into accepting more work promising to take care of the understaffing issue within the month's end. The nursing leader highlighted the qualities of each of the adamant nurses towards the success of the hospital. He was more assertive to nurses who refused to even go on doing already assigned work.

  1. How did you see leadership principles impact decisions around quality nursing care?

Nursing leadership principles positively impacted nursing care with sustaining efficiency, improved patient outcomes, and increased nursing empowerment. Through proper cost-effectiveness and sustaining efficiency, nursing leaders helped increase the quality of patient care. Also, nurses were motivated to provide proper care to patients through proper leadership skills. Lastly, as nurses got motivated and empowered, the patient outcome resulted from proper patient care through practical leadership skills from nurse leaders (Al-Dossary, 2017). Patient outcomes also increase through proper nursing leadership with nurses performing tasks like wound care and patient education successfully. Successful patient outcomes helped in ensuring an increased quality of patient care.

  1. How did you see leadership principles impact healthcare team coordination?

Nursing leadership influenced teamwork positively by enhancing communication, proper use of healthcare services, and improved care coordination. The proper designation of work and tasks increases the coordination between nurses to provide optimal care to patients. As well, nursing leadership principles instilled a sense of accountability when using healthcare services. Therefore, proper guidelines for the effective use of health facilities help provide proper patient care (Babiker et al., 2015). Lastly, nursing leaders ensured that nurses under them had an excellent rapport to help effect proper care through enhanced communication that led to successful patient outcomes.

  1. Demonstrate a basic understanding of the organizational structure, mission, vision, philosophy, and values.

Tell me at least 1 example from your practicum that meets the above activity statement.

How did you see your leader meet the above statement?

  1. Can you specifically highlight each element for the clinical facility or your place of choice if you are doing simulation?
    1. What is the facility's organizational structure?

Huston Methodist Hospital works on a matrix organizational structure. Huston Methodist Hospital team has the chief executive officer at the top of the management tier (Williams, 2017). The organization is organized with a dedicated team of health professionals. At the top of the hospital is a 10-person steering committee headed by the president and chief executive officer Marc L. Boom. Below them, the Digital Obsessed Innovation People Committee of 25- people team (Houston Methodist, 2020). Below in hierarchy are different departmental heads, doctors and nurses, and other health professionals in the hospital.

  1. What is its mission?

To provide high quality, cost-effective health care that delivers the best value to the people we serve in a spiritual environment of caring in association with internationally recognized teaching and research.

  • What is their vision?

To provide high quality, cost-effective health care that delivers the best value to the people we serve in a spiritual environment of caring in association with internationally recognized teaching and research.

  1. What is their philosophy?

To provide high quality, cost-effective health care that delivers the best value to the people we serve in a spiritual environment of caring in association with internationally recognized teaching and research.

  1. What are their values?

Huston Methodist Hospital is built on values of compassion, integrity, respect, accountability, and excellence.

  1. Did you see any of these elements within your clinical immersion? If so, please describe which ones and how they were present.

While attending my practicum, my healthcare facility advocated for all core values that Huston Methodist Hospital stands for compassion, integrity, respect, accountability, and excellence.

I witnessed compassion and acre through the facility's efforts to promote the health of patients. Integrity was incorporated in the treatment of everyone as equal without any limitations or biases. Accountability was a core value that helped each nurse practitioner honor their tasks. Respect came from the varying ethnicities of the nursing fraternity of different socio-demographics with no discrimination amongst them. Lastly, excellence was top of the list, with each of the nurses working towards proper patient-centered care and achieving optimal patient outcomes.

  1. Utilize an iterative cycle of clinical judgment, including prioritization and delegation.

Tell me at least 1 example from your practicum that meets the above activity statement.

How did you see your leader meet the above statement?

As a hospice nurse, I encountered MN, a 75-year old male whose lips and skin was dry. His chart showed that he ate very few proteins and has been bedridden for three months consecutively. He had minimal movements where I recognized that he might be developing a risk of bedsore. While attending to him, I applied preventative measures to reduce his bedsore condition. These included moving him to change his position at least once every two hours, recommend a pressure-relieving mattress, and smooth back massages.

    1. How did you feel about using the clinical judgment model in the practicum setting?

Clinical judgment helped me move beyond observation and the following charts. As a practicing nurse geared towards patient-centered care, clinical judgment was essential in ensuring simple information was integrated into my review of patients to help in the proper interpretation and provide a rational perspective to issues arising with patients.

  1. How did you see it impact prioritization?

Clinical judgment helped in addressing patient prioritization according to their situations. Observing patients who needed fast medical care than minor issues would allow proper care handed to debilitating states of seriously unwell patients while care was designated to those with minor infections (Manetti, 2018). Clinical judgment helped increase patient care and increase patient outcomes.

  1. How did you see it impact delegation?

Clinical judgments positively impacted the delegation of work through building teamwork, trust, and optimization of work. According to their skills, nurses were delegated tasks increasing collaboration and teamwork between nurses working on one patient (Manetti, 2018). The nurses in collaborating on work built trust that would assure each other in providing patient care. Also, tasks designated were done to success, reducing workloads, and increasing patient outcomes.

  1. Demonstrate professionalism and civility.

Use these questions to help you answer the above statement:

    1. How did you specifically use professionalism in this clinical immersion?

Professionalism is vital in the nursing profession. During my clinical immersion, I applied professionalism through providing quality patient care that ensured all patients under me received necessary care according to their conditions. Also, I demonstrated professionalism by respecting the values of my patients and co-workers. This helped build a bond of trust and openness to be able to provide patient care. Lastly, I propagated professionalism by advocating for changes in the healthcare facility to help necessitate change that bettered patient care involving suggestions on how to reduce patient fall cases.

    1. How did you demonstrate civility within this clinical immersion?
  1. Please explain 1 experience related to civility.

During my clinical immersion, I came across patient DE, a 75-year-old woman suffering from dementia. During one of her clinical reviews, she was rude to a Nurse FR, whom she claimed only gossiped and had forgotten to bring DE her medication. She got in a fit of rage to the point that she refused to get care from Nurse FR.  DE termed Nurse FR as incompetent and slow. Nurse FR had brought DE her medication and placed it on the other side of her bed before running out to get her assessment sheet. I intervened in the situation and implored DE that it was only a slight problem of perspective. Understanding that DE's dementia has set her to receive her medication from her bed's right side; instead, Nurse FR was on her left. DE finally calmed down, apologized for her outburst, and agreed to have Nurse FR as her caregiving nurse.
