Reflection Based on Plato’s Allegory of The Cave
Plato’s Allegory of The Cave alleges that knowledge can be acquired through own senses and perceptions. Individuals can develop their own skills of thinking and discover their own unique solutions to the problems that they face through philosophical reasoning. Such a position is presented by the conversation between Plato’s brother (Galucon)and Socrates. In the conversation, a prisoner; who previously did not understand his surroundings, manages to escape after being released from chains and getting healing of his lack of wisdom (Plato, 1945). In my own life, the acquisition of knowledge through intellectual reasoning made my entire understanding of the world change. Specifically, when I was a 10-year old, I thought that everything that my parents owned belonged to us and other children were not supposed to benefit from our possessions. As such, I always hated seeing my parents share some of my brother’s old toys with the son of our domestic worker. I failed to understand why my parents had to give up our property to other people. However, when I continued to acquire more education in school, my intellectual capacity increased because I learned the concepts of sharing and charity, especially towards those in dire need. I felt that what my parents were doing was basically helping those in need. I came to understand the world as an unequal place where some people have more than others. My understanding of things changed from thinking that everything my parents had belonged to us to knowing that sharing is one of the virtues that people should embrace. As such, Plato’s Allegory of The Cave about how people’s understanding of the world change via the acquisition of knowledge is justified.
