Answer
Week 8: Reflection on Achievement of Outcomes
This reflection focuses on development of an understanding of the role of advanced practice nursing in the international context. The scope includes analysis of the global aspect of healthcare as well as the effect of global health on the U.S. healthcare system. In addition, the implications of global health on my clinical practice are also discussed in this paper. Informed decision making process should inform nursing practice and promotion of patient outcomes.
Making Informed Decisions
Informed decision-making process in nursing practice needs to be based on a global perspective. Nurse practitioners should use evidence-based publications and rely on relevant data in their decision-making process. Berwick, Snair, and Nishtar (2018) identified some key global health challenges facing the global healthcare system that needs to be addressed including poor healthcare quality. There is need to improve healthcare quality. Besides, nurse practitioners ought to advocate for eradication of challenges such as corruption and institutional collusion in healthcare industry, since they have negative effect on healthcare quality. Besides, advocating for continuous improvement of healthcare quality in global healthcare systems is a necessity. Alignment of policy, incentives, leadership, and culture at all system levels is a precondition for fighting corruption in global health and for promoting accountability, integrity, and stewardship (Berwick et al., 2018). Nurse practitioners are leaders who will drive increased adoption and use of technology in various healthcare systems around the world for realization of better healthcare outcomes (Berwick et al., 2018). Concepts such as affordability of quality care and universal health coverage need to drive decision-making process (World Health Organization (WHO), 2018). In this course, concepts such as health care, informed-decision making, evidence-based practice, adoption of technology, and better alignment of healthcare policy to meet healthcare needs will influence my learning experience and practice.
Global basis of patient outcomes should also direct nurse practitioners in making of informed decisions. Prioritization of the needs of healthcare staff, the larger community as well as the patient/healthcare consumer will promote achievement of better patient outcomes. Care delivery systems need to meet varied and dynamic needs of patients, healthcare workforce, and the community since these needs tend to vary with culture, country, region, and a particular context (Berwick et al., 2018). Growing public expectations, the ambitious new health goals, and the changing health needs are raising the bar for health-systems to generate greater social values and produce better health outcomes (Kruk et al., 2018). To improve patient outcomes, I would apply concepts such as patient participation and multidisciplinary collaboration in decision making process would promote achievement of better patient outcomes (Berwick et al., 2018). Global health strategies such as provision of people-centered services, adequate staffing, better coordination of healthcare services, and putting necessary health infrastructure in place would help in promotion of health quality and facilitation of better patient outcomes (WHO, 2018).
Application to Clinical Practice
In the upcoming clinical practicum, content from NR506 will be useful and I will put it into practice. At the moment, I believe I have right skillset and leadership education to perform my roles, forge partnerships and collaborations, and work effectively with a multigenerational and multi-disciplinary team (Dyess et al., 2016). Besides, using my knowledge in healthcare policy, I will be in a better position to identify issues that can be addressed by policy change. In such case, I would advocate for policy change so as to address the identified challenges. A nurse leader is expected to lead in a challenging practice environment to meet performance standards and goal, manage procedure and policy changes, and foster teamwork (Dyess et al., 2016). On the other hand, I would be anticipatory, transparent, reflective of societal and personal values, and will provide continuous feedback to my clients/others (Berwick et al., 2018).
My leadership skills will improve my performance and competency as a nurse leader. Idealistic expectations of leadership such as clinical expertise, flexibility, advanced knowledge, accessible, assisting with patient care when needed, knowing staff members, and advocating for staff members would inform my clinical practicum experience (Dyess et al., 2016). I would also use evidence-based resources to make informed decisions in my clinical practice. Evidence-based practice is necessary for provision of high-quality care. My clinical services should be based on latest evidence-based research evidence (Steglitz et al., 2015). Other shared strategies include that I would apply in my future clinical practice include shared-decision making (Steglitz et al., 2015). Lastly, I would be cautious but have an optimistic outlook about my leadership and future roles (Dyess et al., 2016).
Conclusion
Evidence-based practice is the foundation of global health and the practice of nursing. In my clinical practice I would apply strategies that I have learnt such as evidence-based decision making, shared-decision making process, and patient involvement to improve health care outcomes with a global perspective. My idealistic expectations of leadership, ability to lead in a challenging practice environment, and being cautious but optimistic will make me an effective nurse leader in my upcoming clinical practicum. My advocacy knowledge and skills may be applied to promote continuous improvement of a healthcare system to improve patient outcomes and delivery of healthcare services.
