Reflective Essay Alison Delgado Case Study
Finding oneself in a medical emergency is not something anybody whether a patient or healthcare providers would want or wish since it presents with several difficulties that requires not only specialists but also collaboration. Notably, Tim Delgado and Alison Delgado case study that can be retrieved from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXIZAlMKmhM provides an insight of how emergency as well as chronic conditions in health institutions should been handled in order to result into a positive patient outcome. This essay, therefore, provides some of the lesson that I have learned from the case study.
There are key take away points that I will remember from the case study. The first one is the importance of quality care. It is well noted that the extent of Alison’s injury was grave; however, provision of quality care proved me wrong since she began to recover sooner than expected. Secondly, I have learned that healthcare institutions should invest highly on infrastructure as well a streamlined communication system. In this case, the hospital could fly the patients and the pilots could be reached at the needed time. As stated by Jung (2017), delay of care provision is one of the causes of death of several people besides human errors.
One of the alternate professions that is mentioned in this case study and has impacted the Alison’s recovery is fitness instructor. It is observed in the video when Alison takes much of her time in the gym with her husband. This particular profession has really assisted Alison to strengthen her bones and joints and make her fit for her daily activities. Besides physiotherapy, physical fitness enhanced her ability of locomotion. With time, it was observed that she could run as before using gym machines.
There are important similarities that exist between a Medical Laboratory professional's role and fitness instructor. The main one is assessing the progress of the patient in regards to recovery. Basically, a laboratory technician will assess several aspects of movement by examining the ligaments and the broken muscles. On the same note, a fitness instructor also assesses if the client is progressing well in regards to movements.
One of the most important that thing that I have learned about interdisciplinary team is collaboration. As stated by Ballester et al. (2019), nursing or healthcare as an institution is composed of different specialists who work together to bring change on one patient. As such, the rate of coordination and collaboration is more important in attaining positive patient outcome. As observed in this case, right from calling the flight to surgery to the gym, several healthcare providers have been put to task to ensure that Alison recovered fully. Another issue of interdisciplinary team that I have found to be very significant is effective communication and sharing the same goals. In this particular case, everyone had a goal of ensuring that Alison recovers and all of them worked towards that goal which was ultimately achieved. Not surprisingly, the team participants did not raise any challenges or issues related to individual characteristics.
I have gained several insights from my colleagues post. One of them is the importance of resources and infrastructure in healthcare. Several posts have mentioned that people still lose their lives s a result of delayed care particularly when an accident happens in the remote area or an individual critically falls sick far from the hospital. This assertion has been linked to fact that Alison was airlifted to the hospital immediately for further medication, something that was important for her recovery. Another important insight that has been demonstrated by most posts is the significance of collaboration and effective communication within health institutions.
