Research Topic: Talent or Technology; What does the Future Nurse Leader Need Urgently?
According to Kleiman, Gendin and Erwin (2015), scientific research is among the most widely applied researches that involves the application of measurable data in enhancing existing knowledge, creating new information or testing phenomena. Basic and applied researches are the two main forms of scientific researches; where the former interprets and improves scientific theories for better understanding of phenomena while the latter uses existing scientific theories as available in existing literature to develop practical solutions to real-world challenges (Guthrie, 2010; Brown, 2015). Using the research topic above, the two types of researches can be illustrated as follows.
Basic Research
Topic: Talent or Technology; What does the Future Nurse Leader Need Urgently?
Introduction: According to Mensik and Kennedy (2016), nursing is continuously facing emerging issues like a decline in talents amidst growing opportunities for better health through technology. It may seem definite that technology will provide the ultimate solutions for better care in future but nurse leaders in different settings are still complaining of lack of talent in their already inadequate population of nurses. It is therefore critical to understand what the nurse leaders should urgently seek either a short or long term solution for the future.
Research Objectives: To understand the most urgent need of the nurse leaders going into the future as they expect newer sets of challenges in the provision of care in future.
Hypotheses: First, in future, nurse leaders will have to choose either talent or technology in the provision of clinical care. Second, demand for clinical care will cause a rise in the need for both talent and technology thus presenting critical challenges for nurse leaders.
Research Question: How can nurse leaders determine what they need urgently in a quest to provide quality care in future?
Research Method: Case Study on nurse leaders and few nurses in specific clinical care facilities.
Applied Research
Topic: Talent or Technology; What does the Future Nurse Leader Need Urgently?
Introduction: The need for talent as well as technology in the nursing field is continuously increasing and shaping the nature of decisions made by nurse leaders towards solving different clinical problems. This study therefore seeks to illustrate which of the two aspects is widely applicable as an urgent solution for the diversifying future needs of the clinical care especially from the nurse leader’s point of view as they are the main decision makers in the field.
Research Objective: To determine whether talent or technology should be applied as the urgent solution for the future nursing needs during the provision of clinical care.
Hypotheses: First, the need for talent will always precede the need for technology for nurse leaders. Second, both talent and technology are critical for future care but the technologies take longer to be developed compared to talent. Lastly, talent will always ensure sustained clinical care unlike technology.
Research Questions: When considering talent and technology, which of the two does the nurse leader need urgently in order to ensure successful and efficient care in future?
Research Method: Empirical study of existing literature related to the topic. Literature Review.
