Empowering Women of Color through Media Representations | Dianna Feng | TEDxPittsburgh

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zOnUZZMSao&feature=emb_logo

Discussion post about above ted talk video we did it in the class:

In her TEDx Talk, Dianna Feng provides a discussion of the various ways in which women of color have been underrepresented in the media. For instance, she provides the examples of heroes in films, whereby, she argues that people are likely to think of white male actors such as Harry Potter as the heroes as opposed to women of color. Additionally, in the Fortune 500, Feng argues that women of color take only a small percentage of the members of the Board. However, she argues that the only way that such women can be empowered is by encouraging them, recognizing them, and listening to their narratives as opposed to those that they have been given. Specifically, Feng feels that the only way that women of color can be helped is making them feel confident and defy stereotypes. Although such measures are vital in ensuring women of color have higher self-esteem, it does not entirely help them to explore opportunities that exist such as their white counterparts. The key solutions to empowering women of color include ensuring that there is no discrimination in society and in the media representations. For instance, women of color should not be represented by white women with whit modes. They should be given an equal opportunity to tell and advance their narratives. Feng's propositions on how to empower women seek to assume that the only problem that stands between women of color and success is low self-esteem and failure to defy stereotypes. However, the problem of under representation is more entrenched into the social fabric and addressing it requires social and political changes that give more opportunities to women of color.

Lynch Law in all its Phases

While I was reading, this passage gave me a sense of anger, hopelessness, and disappointment. By the content of the reading I can tell that by the time the author was living that horrible experience, slavery was over, or at least the concept of slavery was illegal and unconstitutional. The fact that black people owned houses and businesses make me realized that by this time they were free and in control of their lives. However, they still weren’t in control of hatred towards them coming from white neighbors. Well, actually nobody can control how others feel around us, even today. We are probable to get enemies, but they might not be in relation to racism, or so we think. I believe that the white people that hunted the colored people in the reading weren’t happy that black people were being successful and enjoying their free, American lives.

It’s disappointing that those who committed the lynching got away with murder. I can’t fully imagined how bad things were when black people were believed to have value only as property. They must have felt hopeless, to the point where many actually believed that they were only born to become slaves and do however their masters pleased. I can’t even conceive a vivid image of how brutally they were treated at some point. I mean, they had to go through torture, violence, and mistreatment from people that believed that were superior to them. Nobody is more or less than anyone else, there is only one race in the world, and this is human race. We all have the same rights because we are the same. Just by knowing of the unimaginable things color people suffer gives me the chills because how can someone go through so much pain and hatred?

By reading this piece, I felt somehow angry, knowing that it’s just history and nothing can be done to change it. I don’t know where human kindness was at when people were nothing less than property. But the thing that disappoints me the most is that the police officers weren’t punished in any way, when they were the ones going to the People’s Grocery and going after these men. It is truly a self-defense case, and it was in vain that three poor men paid with their lives. I like to see television shows that are about police detectives searching and prosecuting murder suspects, such as the one called, The First 48. It is outstanding the amount of work they do in order to get their suspect behind bars. I believe that on this case justice wasn’t serve. The judge just said that the lynchers were unknown and that was it. I think that something more could have been done, but it’s probable that even if they knew who the killers were, they still would find them guilty.

The laws apply to every single citizen of this country, beyond skin color, economic status, or social status. Having to deal with unfair laws must be definitely stressful, even more where the situation affects us directly. The relatives of the three black men murder outside the jail should had been distraught and angry because there was no way to rebel against the white supremacy that was governing them. If people don’t feel protected by those whom are supposed to do so, then how can anyone live peacefully? I’m glad that I didn’t live during those periods of time because I don’t know how I would have react. It was an act of injustice and those who cowardly committed the murder were still free. The authority always has to be respected, and so we are taught, but in order for us to do so, we need to see that the authority has the same fundamentals, values, and beliefs as the people they swear to protect.

Answer

Self-Reflection Précis

Women have, over the years, endured discriminatory treatment in various societies all over the world. In the early days, a traditional woman in India and a woman in Europe received almost similar discriminatory treatment. The society considered them weak and inferior to men. However, due to the efforts of various feminist movements, the status of women, although slowly started to improve. Surprisingly, the feminist movements benefited women in majority groups such as the whites and not the women from minority groups such as blacks and immigrants. Watching the video by Dianna Feng elicited a colossal disappointment at the society for failing to adopt gender equality.

The media achieves differential treatment of women by subdividing them into various categories such as white, black, and immigrant. The subdivisions have created a society that addresses the plight of the wealthy and majority-white women while assuming the tribulations of the other women and then congratulating themselves for addressing the women's concerns.  This preferential treatment led to the emergence of intersectional feminists. They understood that apart from gender, factors such as race, immigration status, and class play a vital role in determining the fate of women in society.

The modern women from minority groups are far from winning the war on equality.  Being an Indian Punjabi woman, I regularly have to deal with societal stereotypes plaguing Indian women.  For instance, society expects me to choose and excel in careers in sciences and mathematics since they believe Indians and Asians are good in such fields. Such widely held stereotypes drive several women into pursuing careers they do not like, thus robbing them of their right to choose their life and future.

I feel the media has played a significant role in fanning the current problems bedeviling women from minority groups in the country. Over the years, the media has failed to leverage its massive power to influence public perception for the good of the women from minority groups. The media under-represents them and their interests in society.  For instance, after several complaints, the society now has female heroines such as superwoman to help motivate young females. However, none of the heroines represents women from minority groups. Such absence leads one to wonder whether it was just an omission or made by design.

Furthermore, even in real life, women like me have few role models to look up to in the corporate world.  There are few minority women in positions strong enough to motivate others to work hard and rise. Moreover, those who rise always have to double their effort as they have to continually prove to people who are socialized to believe that minorities lack the ability and intelligence needed to do specific tasks that their beliefs are wrong.

In conclusion, even though I feel that women from minority groups still have a long way to go, it is essential to start making simple changes that will ultimately lead to the significant societal change necessary to improve the plight of minority women. The media can headline the changes by letting the women tell their stories and not using proxies as they did in the past. Secondly, women should be recognized for their true potential and continuously motivated to pay little attention to the noise coming from societal stereotypes designed to make them feel inadequate. Such measures will help women to overcome their self-defeating thoughts and succeed.
