Servant Leadership
Servant leadership is based on the idea that leaders are put in place so as to serve their followers. Servant leadership defines leaders by their commitment and character to serving others. Fundamental principles of servant leadership include valuing of people, developing people, building of a community, displaying of authenticity, provision of leadership, and sharing of leadership. Valuing of people implies serving, believing, and nonjudgmentally listening to others. Development of people involves facilitation of learning, affirmation, encouragement, and growth. Building of community involves development of strong personal and collaborative relationships. Display of authenticity involves being accountable, open, and willing to learn from others. Leadership provision may encompass taking of an initiative, establishing goals, and foreseeing the future. Sharing of leadership may involve sharing or power and facilitating processes (Aij & Rapsaniotis, 2017).
Listening and empathy are two qualities that support interprofessional communication in delivery of patient care. Listening enables a servant leader to highlight the importance communication. Besides, listening quality makes a servant leader to seek to identify the will of the followers or people. On the other hand, empathy is being able to understand others as well as accept what and how they are. The two qualities can enhance team cohesion and teamwork culture (Aij & Rapsaniotis, 2017). Servant leaders often create communication culture in an organization resulting in higher levels job satisfaction, creativity and trust among team members (Kumar, 2018).In addition, empathy and listening enables a servant leader to take a holistic approach in engaging followers in multiple dimensions, which include emotional, ethical, spiritual, and relational dimension so as to enable each member of team to become what they are capable of becoming (Eva et al., 2019)
