Does Shakespeare still Matter?
Today, Shakespeare’s work is still quite famous, despite it being over 400 years old. The various plays have become a focus of many stages and screens across the world. With each generation, Shakespeare’s work continues to resonate. Therefore, it is evident that his work is still relatable today, even though it was produced centuries ago.
One reason why the work is still relatable today is that it greatly influenced the English language. Individuals tend to quote Shakespeare regularly even without knowing it. For example, phrases such as “it’s Greek to me” and “tongue-tied” were first stated by Shakespeare (Boston). Therefore, his contribution is the reason why he will constantly be acknowledged. Second, Shakespeare’s work is cosmic as evidenced by how most of the characters have names that correspond to moons. For example, in “The Merchant of Venice”, the name Portia corresponds to a moon from the Planet Uranus (Boston). As such, his influence is also evident in science.
Third, the works may still be relatable considering how many people still have doubts about the actual authorship of his works (Boston). This is an approach that continues to make the works famous owing to the ongoing debate and research on who may be the real authors. In addition to this, the fact that Shakespeare has been used as a corporate logo for a bookshop by Jacob Tonson is also another contributor (Boston). This is why the name and the related works will constantly remain relatable in current times.
In conclusion, Shakespeare is still quite famous for his works that are still being used to teach literature in many schools today. It is almost as if the production was recent. These are some of the reasons why Shakespeare still matters today.
