Finn provides a firm argument in support of an economic defense of self-interest and markets, disagreements about self-interested behavior and the level of market morality run deep. Collectively, they arise from political philosophy and economics that seem not to have anything in common. Recounting all his arguments in support of and against markets and self-interest, Finn argues that every economy must seek to address four fundamental problems to suit the interests of human beings. The four aspects include; the quality of relations, allocation, scale, as well as distribution. Additionally, every viewpoint on market morality discourses covertly and implicitly the cultural, economic, and political contexts of markets, which Finn refers to as ‘the moral ecology of markets’. The pursuit of self-interest in markets must be inhibited by the prevailing moral frameworks developed by individuals, government, institutions, and groups.
Sandel argues that human contemporary society is unfair due to material inequality. This concept occurs such that the ability of people to afford and pay for purchased goods is totally different. Free exchanges do not, therefore, exist because a single party is effectively coerced by poverty. All these factors are equated to corruption since Sandel makes it clear that some items should not be for sale because selling them is degrading them. When poor people reach out to sell their organs, it is because they are poor and willing to take up anything for survival reasons and not because they actively want to flog their body systems. In effect, there is no issue with marketization, but then with the manner, it operates. Exchanges should be made fair, coercion removed, and background material inequality stopped so that individuals can sell their goods and services more freely. As Sandel discusses, the root of the issue is the anthropological conventions underlying marketization, how human nature is conceived.
Finn’s account is able to successfully address the challenges of Sandel’s objections because in his account, Finn puts much emphasis on the parameters of humane economies, and what needs to be adjusted in order to fight corruption, inequality, and poverty. He goes further to outline that merely marking essential characteristics and outlining the intellectual boundaries will not competitively provide concrete material for a humane economy. Rather, it requires appropriate conduct and treatment of people from the top authorities who run the economic graph. In this regard, the appropriate autonomy of economic disciplines must be respected and the logic of morality and logic of the market shown to intersect.
