• The Role of Art and Artists in Times of Conflict or Violence

   

  Artists have a responsibility in times of conflict or violence. Art can build peace and encourage reconciliation processes by creating a dialogue between opposing groups and promoting tolerance and diversity (Leiner & Schliesser, 2017). Artists are the voices of different societies, especially among the marginalized groups, as they address different types of violence and violations experienced. Additionally, art may serve as a way of enhancing copying relationship among people experiencing conflicting opinions.

  Pablo Picasso created a dove lithograph in black and white in 1949. The artwork is one of the most beautiful artistic creations that find meaning in the past and the current society. Picasso’s dove lithograph was used in the poster of the Paris Peace Congress in 1949. The dove became a symbol of peace and world communism. The “Dove of Peace,” the name the dove was given after its implication for peace, revolutionized the artist’s impressions on various issues that affect society. Other artists also made paintings to restore world peace, especially after World War II (Leiner & Schliesser, 2017). The painting was used for peace congresses around the world by various peace movement organizations.
