    Statistics in the Field of Health Care

    Introduction

    Healthcare as a scientific discipline is data-driven, and this by extension means that there is an application of statistical concepts and methods to better the understating of concepts and better patient care. Statistical methods have been previously used to manage pandemics and disease outbreaks by mapping areas and instituting isolation measures in order to minimize disease spread and further loss of lives. Modern medicine has taken this further as data and statistics have become the core of healthcare practice (Wicker & Browning, 2020).

    Historical Application of Statistics in Health Care.

    Historically, statistics have been applied and used to build the public health system in several ways. The most significant of all is the establishment of epidemiological data. This mainly occurred in the 1950s as the CDC collaborated with various healthcare personnel to help in establishing data that could map areas and continents (Stroup & Lyerla, 2011). This data was used to design disease prevention measures specific to select areas that were identified as endemic zones. In addition to this, drug trials were mainly pegged around the number of people who recovered against those who died following infection and administration of a given drug. Statistical methods were then applied to determine the efficacy of the said therapeutic agent.

     An example of a Statistical Application

    Statistics continue to influence drug development and drug trials. This is a practice that started in the early 19th century. A good example in the history of the use of statistical concepts in healthcare is Alexandria Louise. He was branded as the first modern physician after he introduced the use of numerical methods in patient care. This practice has been carried forward to modern medicine that is evidence-based and data-driven extensively.

    Conclusion

    Healthcare is a scientific field, and as such, the use of statistical methods will continue to grow and thrive. Healthcare practitioners need to learn the concepts and take part in the scientific process that will change medicine for the better.
