Discussion: Strategies for Academic Portfolios
Just like marketing companies build a strong brand strategy to ensure increased visibility and credibility of their products they are advertising, nurse-scholars need to develop a personal brand through the development and building of an academic portfolio (Casey & Egan, 2013). The construction of a portfolio which focuses on academic achievements aids in enabling the nurse-scholars to share the results of their efforts and hence contribute to their success. This paper reflects the strategies which can be pursued in the development of a portfolio.
One of the strategies that I can use in the building of a portfolio for my academic achievements is manually listing the evidence of my competencies and expertise. In this case, I would document the various certifications that I have obtained (whether initial or continued) as well as any other materials which are evidence of my career achievements (Smith, 2011). Using such a strategy will ensure that I provide a carefully selected and organized as well as labelled list which can ensure that my achievements and competencies are well documented for presentation to potential employers (Casey & Egan, 2013). Additionally, I can use the strategy to monitor my career progress in meeting personal and professional learning goals.
The other strategy would be crafting an e-portfolio which will include creating my own website page and posting all the relevant information related to my achievements and competencies and hence provide potential employers with my qualifications. Notably, according to Norris et al. (2012), an e-portfolio can provide the nurse-scholars with an opportunity to introduce themselves to the job market. In specific, by posting their information online, I will make my qualifications and competencies visible and hence attract potential employers (Hannans & Olivo, 2017). An e-portfolio; for instance, on Instagram or LinkedIn, will help create an attractive brand identity and make me visible to not only my peers who can refer me to potential jobs but also to employers who can be impressed.
In conclusion, building an academic achievement and growth portfolio not only displays the competencies of nurse-scholars but also increases their viability to potential employers. One of the strategies that I can deploy to build my portfolio is via the creation of a manual list of the various certifications and accomplishments that I have made so far in my academics and career. Additionally, I can create an e-portfolio in LinkedIn which can display my information to potential employees and hence increase my credibility and visibility.
