Discussion: Strategies for Academic Portfolios
In the realm of marketing, a successful branding strategy is one of the most important contributors to organizational success. A solid branding strategy can help add visibility and credibility to a company’s products.
Similarly, nurse-scholars can build a personal brand to add visibility and credibility to their work. You can begin building your brand by developing and maintaining an academic portfolio. Such an activity can help share the results of your efforts and contribute to your success. This Module’s Discussion asks you to consider and share strategies for building your portfolio.

Answer
Strategies of Developing Portfolios
Portfolios are personalized long-term documentation or records of student mastery of the course materials. An indispensable element of portfolios is students’ reflections on their progression and learning towards the mastery of the materials documented in their portfolio. This paper provides three strategies I will use to make my portfolios in a manner that can be of help to me as I continue to finish this program.
The first strategy I will use is to create the portfolio is to make the layout as simple as possible. According to Lowenthal, Dunlap, and Stitson, (2016), the layout for individual projects as well as group projects should be well organized, straightforward, and all about the work. The whistles and the bells (gradients, patterns, drop shadows) should be kept to a minimum, since they have the ability to interfere with the course of the layout. A simple portfolio is easy to follow and prevents destructions.
The second strategy of making the portfolio is planning the sequence of the projects appropriately. According to Yastibas and Yastibas (2015), there is an approach for sequencing the projects in the portfolio: show the second best task first, and the strongest projects last. The reason behind the approach is to start with an outstanding task, and then end with a “knock-out.” It is important to note that the last task is the one which resonates longer with the observer, so the impression that lingers will be one of a quality book.
Lastly, I will create a portfolio that address “the whole student”. Portfolios should be about the whole student, not only math or English class. My portfolio will reflect everything that I engage in and not limited to school.
