Answer
Stress Perception and Response in Introverts
My friends describe me as antisocial, dull and difficult. I agree, because as an introverted person, I have a natural aversion for group activities; I take pleasure in solitude, in maintaining a small circle of friends, and I am acutely aware of my feelings, strengths and limitations.
I have noticed, by introspection and input from friends, a natural tendency in me to perceive stress as a threat. In particular, I have had this nagging fear of stress and associated negative health outcomes such as hypertension, heart disease, obesity, depression and anxiety for a long time. This position, far from the better approach of viewing stress as a challenge and a potential launch pad for personal growth, has made it difficult for me to handle stress effectively. Incidentally, most of my hospital visits last year were attributed to inability to cope with financial and social pressures.
My response to stress was difficult to understand for family and friends, for the most part. Recently when I commenced treatment for ulcers, I found it difficult to inform family members. In fact, it was two weeks later, after days of prodding, and probing by my aunt that I finally disclosed my condition. I had resorted to solitude, as I felt a need to recharge. Those periods of solitude helped me to research on my condition, available interventions, and the right medicine to take. While I religiously kept my doctor’s appointments, I still had to overcome the temptation to self-medicate. With hindsight, I think, I could have done less harm to my social networks by contacting them at the very least. In addition, by the help of friends and family, I am learning to harness the power of positivity so as to emerge from stressful situations, faster and stronger.
