Study Critique
Conducting a profound research is dependent on an array of elements among them the methodology such as qualitative, quantitative, or mixed strategies. A critical aspect of effective studies is the purpose which indicates the reason for conducting the research, methodology and the location or population involved (Newman & Covrig, 2013). This paper is a critique of Wilhelmy et al. (2015) study where the research purpose, integration of theory and social change aspects are analyzed.
Evaluating the purpose statement in Wilhelmy et al. (2016) study using the purpose checklist, it is evident that it meets almost all the requirements. The purpose statements state “to use a qualitative approach to create a taxonomy and a conceptual model by identifying and analyzing the broad range of possible interviewer IM intentions, behaviors, and intended outcomes” (Wilhelmy et al., 2019, p. 314). The signaling words, in this case, are “the aim of the present study” which notifies the reader on the research purpose statement. Next, the statement identifies that the research approach follows a qualitative methodology. Considering the intention of the study, the above statement indicates that it will create the conceptual and taxonomy model through a specific process which introduces the next element of the participants who are the interviewers. However, the statement does not indicate the research site although other information used to indicate that the statement is framed in a manner that is consistent with the problem are identified. These include identification and analyzing IM intentions, intended outcomes and behaviors. Evaluating the specifications of a qualitative statement, it focuses on two phenomena, identifying and analyzing the different interviewer intentions. The action verb is “create,” and as reflected in the rest of the statement, it uses a neutral language and provide a definition of the central phenomenon
The study effectively integrates theory, problem and purpose elements. To begin with, the authors analyze the challenges related to their topic where they mention that signaling theory is not well understood nor defined in the interviewers’ context, IM behaviors, and intentions. As a result, the authors identify that there is need to present a more detailed theoretical comprehension of the reasons and how interviewers attempt to develop impressions on applicants. Also, the study submits that there is need to critically comprehend more about the signaling behaviors that are deliberate by the interviewers and the intentions. Burhkolder, Cox, & Crawford (2016) notes that a profound problem statement is critical for developing the purpose statement. The study upon drawing the purpose statement from the mentioned problem proceeds to provide a detailed background related to the problem and purpose statement. Among the topics covered in this regard include the interview signaling process, some of the potential signaling on the interviewer’s side, and the variation between the interviewer’s and applicants signaling (Wilhelmy et al., 2016). This provides a solid foundation for the study and enhances the quality and validity of the study
The relationship between research and social change is centered on the impact that the study has on the various societal realms. I concur with Babbie (2017) that through research, it is possible to establish some of the issues affecting the society and therein develop effective management strategies. In addition, research assists other people to understand various processes and implement the proposed changes in their current field. For instance, the study by Wilhelmy et al. (2016) evaluates what interviewers signal to the applicants, deliberate signals, and intended outcomes. In such a study, the conclusions drawn from the results are essential for managers or new organizations which seek to enhance their staffing process. On the other hand, such a study enhances the applicant’s knowledge of the signals to look for during the interview and understand their meaning.
