Stylistic Analysis of “Where the World Began” by Margaret Laurence

In the story “Where the World Began” by Margaret Laurence, she describes her childhood experiences during the winter and summer from her childhood perspective. She describes her environment as a place that is bound to transform from a place full of life to death. She uses the imagery of winter and summer to show how her environment transforms. Next, she uses snow and the desert to show a difference in the landscape from a time of beauty.

In this story, the picture of how the environment changes during the winter and summer has been created. During the winter, this author talks of how much fun she had riding on the sleigh and walking in the snow until dark. She talks of how one would be lucky to see the Northern lights flaring in the sky, along with the cold glitters of the stars. Unfortunately, the same experience has not been presented for the summer time. She describes this as a time where farmers would not smile. It was that time of the year where young men would come at their door to request for a drink and sandwich.

Various stylistic devices have been used in this text. First, she argues that the frost on the windows formed ferns and flowers and eerie faces. The artists of the wind are responsible for this outcome. Diction is noted in these phrases because the word choices have given the wind human characteristics. Also, figurative language has been used where she claims that the flaring Northern Lights were like scrawled signature of God. Lastly, during summer, the drought and depression have also been likened to evil deities.

The author of the story seems to use winter and summer to symbolize beauty of her environment, despite many flaws it still has. It is evident that the flaws which are represented as drought and Depression, will always be there. However, that should not be a reason to believe that the environment is never beautiful.

In the story “Where the world began,” the author describes her life experiences which have enabled her to witness both the good and the bad in her environment. She believes that life began in the winter which is where she was mostly alive as a child as evidenced by her memories of fun. However, there is always the interruption of the summer which at times comes with periods of hardship for many.
