Introduction 

In the 1950s, the American Medical Association (AMA) considered alcoholism as an illness (Nova Recovery Center, 2018). Notably, the disease alters the brain and its functionality by controlling the ability of a person to make healthy life choices. The major focus of this paper is to provide an examination of what happens at the third stage of alcoholism.

The Third Stage in the Development of Alcoholism

            The third stage of alcoholism is referred to as the phase of physical and emotional deterioration (Nova Recovery Center, 2018). The phase is the final and the most severe alcoholism stage. At this point the affected person shows several symptoms. For instance, an obsession with drinking is one of the common signs depicted by the affected persons since they find it difficult to overcome the temptation of drinking alcohol at any point in time. Additionally, patients at this stage will often find it necessary to drink alcohol before they can complete their daily activities. According to Iannone, Iannone and Bernstein (2014), it is also at the third stage that a person with alcoholism problem will have developed a full-blown addiction to the intake of the alcohol, and thus will also be experiencing the associated emotional and physical consequences associated with it. Moreover, the affected person will have completely become obsessed with the drinking to a point that he/she will be constantly engaging in drinking as well as constantly thinking about when they will have the next drink or even recover from the drinking challenge (Nova Recovery Center, 2018). 

            Taking alcohol to get through the day is one of the common signs shown by an alcoholic who is currently under the third stage of alcoholism. Notably, people at this phase find it common to take alcohol only to get through the day. Furthermore, one may wake up shaking, an aspect that is only controlled through consumption of an alcoholic drink. Other common symptoms associated with this stage include insomnia, anxiety, and depression with an increased potential that the patient will also suffer from a serious health problem (Nova Recovery Center, 2018). Most people in the stage will also experience sleeping problems if they fail to take alcohol. Additionally, an affected person will also self-isolate from close friends and later spend a considerable time drinking. These changes in the social behavior result primarily  from the fact that one starts engaging in erratic behavior alongside a decreased social activity which results to depleted social ties (Iannone, Iannone & Bernstein, 2014).

            Physically, high levels of constant alcohol intake begin to affect an individual’s wellbeing. Notably, one will be prone to contracting respiratory infections, experience cases of pancreas and liver damage. More so, the affected person may also suffer from instances of malnutrition since long-term alcohol abuse prevents the body from effectively digesting food as well as reduces its potential to absorb the proper nutrients (Nova Recovery Center, 2018). Moreover, the mental and emotional health of the affected person continues to deteriorate the more the patient continues to consume alcohol. Although, the addicted individual often realize that drinking is a problem,  they operate on a notion that it is too late for them to regain their normal health. At this point, controlling alcoholism is a challenge since alcohol has completely taken over one’s life with the person losing hope of overcoming the addiction (Iannone, Iannone & Bernstein, 2014).
