Sustainable business development

10-15 years ago, sustainable business development or business sustainability were rarely used terms - you could not find them in most business texts.  By 2000, few trade publications began to call out this "new" business perspective - some thought it was just the next new business fad or trend. But, is it really so "new" - is it a fad?  Why has this concept taken off so rapidly in the past 10 years?  How has it changed Operations and Supply Change Management?

Answer

From my perspective, business sustainability is not a current fad. Majority of business owners practice the idea of a business framework that entails social, environmental and financial concepts. With that regard, entrepreneurs find themselves obliged to aid in managing the impact their business has on the human race. However, to some extent, it is considered as a fad. This is because it has endured all the current fads on grounds of a substantial degree of online business and political context.

The concept of business sustainability can easily be dumb down rather than over-complicate with reference to “new” term. Managing both business’s bottom line profits as well as societal responsibilities to clients and the globe aspires to the concept of business sustainability. Over the recent decade, the concept is considered as the key driver of innovation.

Sustainability sets a disadvantaged norm over rivals in development that do not face the similar pressure with reference to the operation and developing “green” products. In the manufacturing settings, it demands new equipment and processes hence, consumers pay less for eco-friendly products throughout the recession. It also encompasses innovations and inventions in organizational technologies. Additionally, it assists in increasing revenues for companies and better their products too (Grant, Wong & Trautrims, 2017).

The concept has changed both operation and supply chain management in diverse ways. With respect to organization supply chain, it has resulted in distinctive techniques that in turn has led to a severe level of production. It has also led to reduced waste and emissions, reduced packages cost, and increase the energy efficiency of products. The operation is essential to building a sustainable supply chain that has led to greater energy efficiency and reduction of the firm’s dependency (Tukker et al., 2017).
