QUESTION
swot analysis
Group Assignment
The purpose of the assignment is to work together within your group to apply what you learn or have learned from the lecture and your readings. In this segment, we are focused on trends and trajectories within the field of health informatics, using trends as a means for identifying gaps and even future opportunities within the field. To further the purpose of this unit, you are asked to work with your group to answer the following question(s). Your submission should use a SWOT analysis and be submitted by the deadline listed within your course calendar.
Please refer to the required reading from your coursepack to complete the assignment:
Background
A good way to look at this assignment is examining two sides of the same coin. The trends of challenges and opportunities which are changing the landscape of HI as a field will be important to consider as you launch your career.
The group assignment this week is to perform a SWOT analysis which also looks at Strengths and Weaknesses. All of the SWOT components can guide organizations as they develop strategy to achieve objectives. In this case, you will use SWOT to analyze the field- what challenges do you anticipate there being in the future? What opportunities do you anticipate arising?
Directions: Compose a thoughtful analysis addressing the question(s) above. This is a group submission that will be evaluated using the "application/case study" rubric found under rubrics in your course documents. Write-ups should address all aspects of the prompt and meet other criteria as specified in the rubric; word count is expected to be between 600-800 words.
Please reflect upon your readings and pull additional evidence as helpful to complete and submit a write-up with cited evidence which addresses the following:
Based upon your analysis of the current state of health informatics practice, what are the most critical challengesto be faced by the emerging health informatics professional during the next 5 years?
Based upon your analysis, what are the most critical opportunities for the field of Health Informatics to improve the current state of US healthcare delivery in the next 5 years?
For both parts, please support your assertions with examples and evidence.
Food for thought- As you reflect on these challenges and opportunities identified in your readings and SWOT analysis, what do you see as the areas for growth in HI? How does this translate to your professional growth and career development? What general strategies do you use for career development? Are you better prepared to work in a specific area of informatics? Why are you choosing this particular career path? As we begin discussion surrounding these general questions and responses, we will try to connect how your current experiences fit into the landscape of HI as a whole and discuss professional development strategies to further specialize in an area of health informatics.
USING SWOT: SWOT is typically used within an organization or organizational system, which allows identification of internal and external strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. You may create a visual SWOT analysis as part of your assignment; however, you are not required to differentiate between internal or external trends to the field. You may choose to do so if this helps your group be organized and clear on the points you make.

Answer
The Trends of Challenges and Opportunities in Health Informatics (HI) Field
Health informatics (HI) is utilizing information technology (IT) to enhance patient care. It also covers an extensive discipline of informatics that deals with technology applied to all healthcare areas. This paper discusses the SWOT analysis of the field of HI's, focusing on the trends of challenges and opportunities that should be considered in launching a career path in the field.
Strengths Ø Career opportunities: One can specialize in different work environments, from hospitals to pharmaceutical firms and clinical research centers. Ø Introverted persons might enjoy the fact that direct interactions with patients are little. Ø High earning potential: HI consultants and directors earn a high yearly salary, with some six-figure earning salary.
|
Weakness Ø The health informatics (HI) field requires continuous education on the new field advancements. Ø Most HI careers require post-secondary education. One gets more career opportunities and a higher salary with a Master's degree in HI.
|
Threats Ø Lack of sufficient skilled informatics professionals to fill HI positions which need candidates to have both medical and IT expertise, a combination that is very challenging to find (Joshi et al., 2017). |
Opportunities Ø The Bureau of Labor Statics (BLS) (2020) anticipates HI's growth by thirty-two percent from 2019 to 2029, meaning that HI professionals' demand is growing. Ø With cloud computing, data management framework, and big data continuously changing, the health industry will require experienced HI professionals. Ø The passage of the HI Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act mandated healthcare organizations to design and maintain EHRs by 2015 hence creating demand for HI professionals (Rauf, 2018). |
The major challenge in the HI field is the lack of skilled personnel who are adept with the new system. Effective assimilation of HI into an institution’s operation system requires individuals who are proficient in the IT and medical field. Yet, acquiring a task force with skills from both sectors is relatively hard. This suggests that despite the propositions of implementing this new strategy, the probability of a system failure would be apparent.
Regardless, the introduction of HI has significant opportunities. For instance, healthcare organizations have been compelled to use HI suggesting that there will be a significant demand for employees in the market. What’s more, researchers have predicted an increase in HI professions required to fill different positions at various medical institutions. Respectively, medical institutions utilizing this system will require a dexterous labor force indicating an opening for career opportunities. In connection to this, employees will be able to sustain themselves hence boosting the economy of the region.
After the electronic health record’s (EHR) mandate, HI job postings have risen, and the analysts anticipate that the number of jobs in the HI field will expand by thirty-two percent by 2029. Thus, due to the high demand and shortage of qualified experts with the exceptional blend of employers' skills, HI experts' pay is high (Alshammari, 2016). HI's growth areas are diverse as HI informatics experts are in high demand in industries like medical libraries, consulting firms, pharmaceutical firms, universities, private practice, hospitals, government agencies, data analytics, and many more.
As informatics responsibilities grow, so does the requirement for accurately trained persons to manage them (Carrière et al., 2016). Therefore, someone with a master's in HI can make a difference. Since I have a background in medicine and clinical care and an interest in IT, I intend to enroll for a master's in HI to enlarge my career beyond direct patient care to as a Health Informatics Manager. I am have chosen this career path because I am interested in both the IT and medical fields, and I would like to utilize my technical skills in impacting the future of patient care and delivery.
In conclusion, this paper demonstrates that the trends and trajectories towards adopting EHRs create a high demand for HI professionals even in the future.
