Three Examples of Synthetic Opioids and their Accepted Medical Uses

Synthetic opioids are laboratory manufactured drugs whose composition represents that of naturally occurring opioids derived from poppy plant. In thin brief, examples of three synthetic opioids and their accepted medicinal use are described.

Fentanyl

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid pain reliver (OPR) that has a potential of reducing by 50 to 100 percent. Generally, there is a perception that fentanyl is much stronger in pain relieving and cannot be compared to morphine (Reuter et al., 2021). During medical use of fentanyl is administered to relieve severe pain during and after surgery and cancer treatment. Other uses include administration as breakthrough pain reliver in medical practices of patient pain experience improvement. Various brand names such as Actiq and Duragesic.

Morphine

Morphine is strong pian killer belonging to class opioid analgesics. During administration of this drug, doctors use this drug as an intervention for pain management through changing normal functions of pain receptors (Allison, 2006). Morphine is given through injection by doctors and is required to be used under strict prescriptions as provided by the physician. Among the brand names for morphine are Depolan, Algedol and Graten.

Hydrocodone

Hydrocodone is a synthetic codeine and opioid that offers analgesic effects when used. The action mechanism of this drug includes binding to opioids receptors in the brain to suppress pain. Physicians administer hydrocodone in management of acute pain and in some conditions, it is combined with acetaminophen as well as ibuprofen to attain desired outcome. Brand names for this drug include Dalmacol, Hycet and Lorcet.
