Answer
Ted Talk
Over the years, TED Conferences LLC is an American media organization that has been posting online talks that distribute freely and spread ideas. The talks have kept audiences informed and educated in different fields and in an easily accessible way. The task focuses on Amy Cuddy's talk on TED entitled 'your body language may shape who you are' to enable students to think about self-esteem differently and realize the application to their own lives.
In the Ted talk, Amy Cuddy, a social psychologist, who has majored in prejudice and a teacher in a business school, explains how one’s body language can influence change their life unfolds. The speaker illustrates how body language can greatly assist in making an infinite judgment on a person. The judgments we make influence a lot of things in life like who we hire or promote. According to her Our nonverbals not only influence those we speak to but also us. To a certain her claim, she goes ahead to give an example of nonverbal cues of power and dominance and how they shape us. She states that the minds of powerful people are more solid, more confident, optimistic, and think can win even in a game of chance. They believe in abstract thoughts and tend to take more risks. Those who are not powerful tens to have opposite characteristics. Physiologically, the difference between powerful people and those who are not powerful depends on two key hormones testosterone dominant hormone and cortisol. Those who are powerful do have high testosterone and low cortisol while those who are not powerful have high cortisol and low testosterone. According to the speaker, suppose people decide to fake their character, they should do it till that character becomes part of them. In her conclusion she states Our bodies can change our minds, our minds can change our behaviors and our behaviors can change our outcome.
Generally, the talk was great. The speaker touches on some of the most sensitive issues that in one way or another do lower our self-esteem knowingly or unknowingly. Sincerely, I couldn't agree more with the idea that our bodies do have an effect on our minds which can finally impact given outcomes in our life. The talk was direct and on point, I found nothing challenging and I was able to grasp every bit of the information with ease, however, the summary part of the show was my favorite. The talk seems to have merit and seems valid, however, in matters life, there are several things that the speaker did assume in her speech, and the validity of the talk simply depends on the issue at hand. Several self-esteem e-texts have always encouraged the value of one believing in their selves, this directly corresponds to Cuddy’s statement that our nonverbals govern how we think and feel about ourselves (8:23). Cuddy’s ideas are important, as a person, I do face challenges that can sometimes lower my self-esteem, Cuddy's ideas on our behaviors and mind, and they influence our outcome can be very instrumental.
