The Confederate Battle Flag
The confederate flag was used by the Confederacy or the states that had sought to secede in the wake of the American Civil War. Even after the confederacy had heroically lost the war, the usability of the confederate battle flag continued even as the southerners sought to retain the memories of the Civil War as well as the reconstruction era. Over the past two decades, conflicts have been arising with respect to the symbolism of the flag. Conflicts over the confederate battle flag is a reflection of differing views of history.
As illustrated above, the loss of the confederates has always been considered heroic. This view has, however, been used to meet the ends of different conflicting groups. During the 1890’s, for instance, a memory industry came to be promoted by white politicians and religious leaders even as organizations such as the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the United Daughters of the Confederacy sought to educate the subsequent generations of white southerners with the sheer aim of propagating white supremacy through the avenue of racial segregation and disenfranchisement (Leib, 1995). For some, the confederate flag came to be known as a symbol of white supremacy.
Other groups, however, such as the African Americans view the Confederate flag as a symbol heritage. The African Americans fully participated in the Civil War in their status as slave laborers or even as military volunteers (Leib, 1995). Therefore, the propagation that the war or even the heroic loss symbolizes white supremacy is viewed as flawed by this group.
White supremacists view the confederate flag as a symbol of racial segregation and disenfranchisement of the African Americans whereas the African Americans have the view that the flag is a symbol of heritage. The Conflicts over the confederate flag is a reflection of differing views of history.downsides, hence facilitating an effective engagement process.
