    Learning Activity 4 Instructions

Background to the assignment: You read earlier about paradigm shifts occurring in cultures; Western culture has observed some as well.

Description of the assignment: The following 4 men created a paradigm shift within Western culture: Luther, Columbus, Gutenberg, and Charles Darwin. In this assignment, explain which one of these you deem to have had the most influence on Western culture. Provide concrete reasons that clarify your position. If you include sources, cite them in current APA format. This assignment must be 250–300 words and must include the word count in parentheses. Submit a draft of your Learning Activity to SafeAssign for feedback a few days before the assignment is due.

Submit Learning Activity 4 by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Friday of Module/Week 8.

Answer

The Contributors of Charles Darwin in the Paradigm Shift within Western Culture

Charles Darwin is considered as an individual who has had significant influence on western culture. Notably, Darwin provided a straight forward principle associated with evolution. Evidently, Darwin communicated an idea that random mutation would make some species better suited to their environments in comparison to others. With this general evolution idea, Darwin refrained from making an explicit claim that human evolved from other creatures. However, he came up with a natural selection mechanism which made it easy to explain where species originated from without referencing the creator. This was a unique course which could not be ignored by any subsequent scientific work (Cofnas, 2018).

Taking into consideration the case of cultural evolution as presented under the Darwinian sense of selective inheritance and variation, it is apparent that the inherited habits and different customs as portrayed by western cultures are the primary factors which contribute to human evolution. Evidently, this is associated with the innate ability of the people to acquire language based on their cultural group. Notably, the ideas presented by Darwin influenced the works of social scientists of the late 19th and early 20th century (Marciano & Pelissier, 2000). Darwin’s natural selection theory provides an explanation of adaptation by appealing to vertical transmission. Claidière, Scott-Phillips and Sperber (2014) explain that vertical transmission is the process whereby offsprings will inherit the parental traits as unveiled in cultural processes in the same way as learning. However, it is evident that people will not only learn from their parents, but also from authority-figures and peers among others. This is a process facilitated through oblique transmission. Darwin’s theory is effective since it is founded on the notion that the process of natural selection can be underpinned by learning.
