The Era of Jeffersonian Democracy
Jeffersonian democracy derives the name from Thomas Jefferson, who spearheaded the political transition and movements in the United States between the 1970s and 1820s. The era is characterized by the existence of the Democratic-Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson. Mainly, the party committed itself to American republicanism, hence they opposed everything thought to perpetuate corruption, limit help to the people, erode values, and artificial aristocracy. Consequently, the Jeffersonians were opposed to the Federalist Party that was headed by Alexander Hamilton and their ideals led them to disagree with most manufacturers, bankers, distrusted factory workers, and merchants due to their aristocratic elitism. Over the years, different scholars have written distinct views on the era of Jeffersonian democracy. In this regard, some offer an interpretation of the settings while others explain how the circumstances existed and the significance of Jefferson led the movement to the United States history.
Ericson (2017) highlights that the Jefferson era kick-started the peaceful and democratic experience in the United States. In this regard, he argues that Jefferson’s acquisition of power in a peaceful manner for the first time became the reference point for most individuals and presidents who came later. Moreover, he differed with many people including Hamilton as well as the elite class. However, instead of engaging in battles and restrictive measures. He encouraged them to peaceful adopt republicanism. On the other hand, Croly (2017) explains that the era of Jefferson was not only significant because of his achievements, but also the effects it created. In this regard, the significant influence was on the electoral process by separating the president and vice president vote. Ideally, the change was ideal as it prevented further hold-ups during elections.
Primarily, the two sources help reinforce the explanations in the book by Roark et al. (1877). Principally, they center on the influence it had on the American political process as a result of Jefferson’s actions during his era. However, the drawbacks of these sources are that they do no explain significant actions carried out during the era that has shaped American history.
