Assignment 2: The Definition Essay Introduction

This assignment is marked out of 100 marks and is worth 12.5% of your course grade.

Final essay (with draft submitted): 90 marks Response to peer essay: 10 marks

    Instructions

This assignment includes writing an essay and both receiving and providing peer review before you submit your final essay to your Open Learning Faculty Member. Be sure to review the full set of instructions (all four steps) before you begin.

If you have not already done so, please familiarize yourself with the "Discussions" tool, which is located in the Course Menu on the left-side of the screen. For more information, refer to "Help."

    Step 1

Using the techniques that you have learned so far in the course including, more specifically, Unit 2, create a polished essay of 600 to 650 words on one of the choices presented in the following two topics.

    Topics:

    1. Define one of these terms in an extended definition: loyalty, vanity, motivation, ethics. Use your extended definition to say something fresh and relevant about this abstract and commonly used term. For example, in the sample essay "The Insufficiency of Honesty" (page 241), Stephen L. Carter uses his definitions of honesty and integrity to say something new about the need for integrity in personal and business interactions. For your chosen topic, you should add to or work against the ready, accepted definition. You might, for example, decide that the usual definition of vanity is too narrow, and that you can extend the definition to include actions or attitudes that you feel society should be more concerned about than it is.
    2. Use extended definition to redefine or more narrowly define one of the following terms: education, family, middle age, neighbour. Use your extended definition to say something fresh and relevant about this abstract and commonly used term. We all think we know what we mean by these terms, but you should use your extended definition to comment on or add to social perceptions. For example,

Assignment 2: The Definition Essay 2017-04-04, 9*14 PM

you might say that education is commonly perceived as something formal that happens in an institution, but that there are other forms of education.

As you draft and revise your essay, check that your thesis is clear and supported by your main points. Check that you have used the rhetorical methods explored in this unit, as appropriate, and especially that you have used specific, relevant examples. Check your paragraphs for unity, organization, development, and coherence. Review your introduction and conclusion for interest and appropriateness of tone. Then edit, checking your work for the sentence errors reviewed in Activity 8.

    Checklist:

Here is a checklist for revising, editing, and proofreading. Note that chapters 5 and 6 as well as the Handbook section of your textbook provide further suggestions for checking the final version of your essay.

    Introduction:

Is my essay topic clear to my reader in the first few sentences of the paragraph?

Does my introduction lead the reader to expect specific stages in the developmental section of the paper?

Does this paragraph match the tone of the rest of the essay?
Is there a strong, full, suitably narrowed and clearly worded thesis statement?

    Developmental Paragraphs:

Does each paragraph include a clear topic sentence?
Have I fully analyzed the topic under study?
Have I used a variety of rhetorical methods, as appropriate?
Is each paragraph nicely unified and linked to the essay as a whole?

    Conclusion:

Does this paragraph signal that the essay is complete?
Does this paragraph suggest the larger significance of my ideas? Does this paragraph unify the essay into an artistic whole?
Does this paragraph match the tone of the rest of the essay?

    Note:

Be sure to include your preliminary work and drafts with your final version when you submit the assignment to your Open Learning Faculty Member.

Assignment 2: The Definition Essay 2017-04-04, 9*14 PM

After composing and revising several drafts of your essay, you will be just about ready to submit it. There is, however, one more very important step. Do ensure that you have proofread your essay carefully. This means going beyond spelling and grammar checkers, which are helpful but cannot actually think. I will pass on to you some tips from my own experience and that of my students to ensure careful proofreading:

    1. Reading your essay aloud will often allow you to catch details that you might miss in silent reading.
    2. If you are using a computer, print your essay before you give it a final proofreading. Again, you can sometimes catch things on paper that you might miss on the screen.
    3. Some students say that reading their essays backwards—that is, reading the last sentence first and going backward from there— draws any errors to their attention.
    4. If possible, have a friend read your essay to you. This technique, like some of the others mentioned above, helps you separate yourself from your work and view it with a more critical eye.

    Step 2

Post your essay in the online "Discussions" area under the discussion topic "Assignment 2 Peer Review." You must leave the assignment posted for a minimum of ten calendar days. Since this course has continuous self-paced student enrolment, you may or may not receive feedback from one or more students.

Note: It is your option whether or not to accept advice offered by other students; that is, you may incorporate their suggestions by revising your essay.

    Step 3

Review one of the posted student assignments, preferably but not necessarily the most recent, and post a 150 to 250 word response. You may wish to comment on the extended-definition techniques, including illustration by example, process analysis, and classification or any other aspect of the assignment that would be helpful to your fellow student. The previous checklist should help you formulate your responses, although, of course, you would have to be selective, given the word length of the response. Please write your response in paragraphs, not note form, and be sure to be respectful and polite in everything you suggest.

    Note:

If, for some reason, including TRU-centred system problems, there is no other assignment posted during the ten-day period your assignment is posted, the requirement is waived and you will be marked on your assignment submission only.

Assignment 2: The Definition Essay 2017-04-04, 9*14 PM

    Step 4

After the minimum ten days, submit the following documents to your Open Learning Faculty Member:

Your final word–processed assignment Preliminary work and drafts of your assignment

A copy of your response to another student essay to your Open Learning Faculty Member, along with the date you posted your response to the online "Discussion" area

Recall that you may, as noted earlier, revise your assignment according to the suggestions you received.

Answer

The Insufficiency of Motivation

The term motivation has had a narrow definition in our society. Moreover ‘motivation’ is wrongly perceived in the business environment. In line with Locke’s goal setting theory, I would agree with him on the relationship between motivation and goals. I would, however, argue that motivation requires true and achievable goals for it to be effective. This paper gives insight on how the term “motivation” is wrongly perceived in our society today.

As a student’s leader, I was assigned the task of addressing young entrepreneurs on how to create healthy employee relations for a successful business. “Motivation is a significant aspect of creating healthy employee relationships “I began. From observation, I could tell that the audience listened with much anticipation, eager to know how this could possibly take their businesses to another level. Everyone had taken out their notepad and pen to take notes not knowing what I had in mind about the term motivation. Moreover, the audience had no idea if I was for or against motivation.

Firstly, let us consider the term “motivation.” Motivation has been perceived in various business organizations as an important ingredient to success. According to Dobre, (2013), employee motivation increases performance, an important aspect to business success. Employee motivation entails enticing workers in an organization to enhance their performances in their respective working areas.  Outside the business environment, motivation is regarded as an inward desire to achieve individual goals.

When I reflect about motivation, I think people perceive the term narrowly yet there should be deeper explanations of the term “motivation.” I agree with Edwin Locke about the relationship between motivation and goals (Previn, 2015). Motivation, as I will use the word, requires individuals to be true to goals in their daily lives. Precisely, defining goals and developing the desire to achieve the goals will determine an individual’s motivation in life.

In the business environment, I think motivation is wrongly perceived. From my perspective, motivation is a process that is not achieved through enticement, but rather starts from an inner want to reach individual goals in life. For instance, let us consider a person who has been denied payment after being assigned leadership roles in a charity care center. What would motivate such a person towards performing the tasks assigned? From the business angle, wages are perceived to be a motivational factor. Consider that the person undertakes the duties assigned efficiently. What would have fostered such efficiency and positive results? I would perceive his inner desires to achieve positive results in the charity care center. Additionally, people have differing motivational factors in life; money, provision for the family, ensuring clean environments and many more goals. Although motivation and goals are designed to work together, the two are different. Goals change, but the motivation to achieve one’s desire never changes. Consider for instance the comedy legally blonde. In the movie, Elle Wood had a goal of winning back her ex-boyfriend Warner. From my perspective, that can be identified as a false goal. However, as she follows Warner to Law School, her goals change, and she decided to join law (Jennings, 2017). From the comedy, it can be identified that although her goals changed, her determination to achieve her heart desires remained the same.

Conclusively, the term ‘motivation’ is narrowly defined and requires further elaboration. In the business environment, motivation has been identified as a tool to increase job performances. However, many individuals have been observed to deliver services without demanding any payment for their work. Motivation is an inner desire to achieve something in life. However, from my perspective, individuals should set achievable goals to presume true motivation in the achievement of those goals.
