- QUESTION
Write an essay (or discuss) the following scenario by responding to the questions:
You are in a lifeboat along with four others. You have enough food and water to keep only four people alive for the several weeks you expect to be adrift until you float into a shipping lane and can be discovered and rescued. You will all perish if the five of you consume all the food and water. There is the suggestion that one of you should die so the other four can live.
Would you volunteer to commit suicide?Would you vote to have one go overboard if you choose by straws? Would you vote to throw overboard the weakest and least healthy of the five? If you were on a jury judging the behavior of four who did murder a fifth to stay alive, would you acquit them or convict them of murder? Would your answer be different if the murdered victim was your son or daughter?

Answer
The Overcrowded Lifeboat: Moral Dilemma
If I am in an overcrowded lifeboat where one person should die so that the remaining four can live, I would not volunteer to commit suicide. That would seem unfair to my family back home, despite the fact that it may be for the greater good of those who are on the boat. However, I would agree to vote to have one member go overboard since it would be fair for all those who are present. It is an approach that would mean no one is forced to agree to the action (Szigeti, 2015). If I get the shortest straw, I would feel forced to honour the outcome and jump overboard so that the others can live.
If the vote regards throwing the sick and the weakest member, I would support the process. That is because they are less likely to survive anyway even if they are left on the boat. However, those who are strong can get through the harsh conditions without deteriorating at a much faster rate. Therefore, throwing the weakest member overboard is a utilitarian approach that I would support (Suikkanen, 2019).
If I was on a jury judging the behaviour of the four survivors who murdered a fifth one so they could stay alive, I would acquit them of the crime. That is because the outcome is much better as compared to the death of all five members. My decision would be based on the argument that they made the decision since it was for the greater good of all those who were on board (Szigeti, 2015). If the victim was my son or daughter, I would convict them because I would feel the pain of losing a loved one. As a parent, I would feel like I have a responsibility of ensuring the safety of my children. Therefore, if my child was thrown overboard, it would hurt much more than when a stranger had experienced the same.
