Answer

The prophet’s Hair

The story in "The prophet's Hair" provides a gripping account of the theft of a religious relic containing the hair of Prophet Muhammad. The relic has created a mixed attitude in the story with incredible accounts of the miraculous but disastrous events experienced by individuals who came into contact with it. Although the story says nothing concerning the relic from the onset, it proceeds to make it profound that the relic is full of magic and mystery (Rushdie, 2016). Therefore, it can be a source of blessings or curses to anyone who possesses it. This helps in understanding the narrator's attitude toward the relic as that of consternation.

The relic causes significant drastic changes in Hashim's life, creating mayhem and putting his family on the verge of utter destruction. While the story begins when Hashim is not a religious man, he becomes a stringent religious man upon possessing the relic and demands of his family to follow the new tradition with a presumption that the relic is very powerful and has supernatural powers (Rushdie, 2016). Thus, because of extremism, abuse, harshness, and hypocrisy, the relic creates trouble for Hashim, thereby rattling the foundations of his family. Besides, the relic further destroys Sheikh Sin because of the intentions for seeking the relic, which are evil, cruel, and full of ignorance. The primary concern is the relocation of the item from the holy place to the profane with malicious purposes that only led to disastrous events except for the wife and children of Sheikh, who received miraculous healing.

Elements of magical realism thus become manifest in the story since it primarily contains morality, magic, and mystery. The story creates a sense that the relic brings catastrophe upon the greedy. Despite the cries from the authorities concerning the missing relic, the moneylender fails to hand over the item with justifications that the prophet would not approve of the relic-worship. In every aspect, the moral dilemma remains central when faced with the relic, especially its iconic secular view and the religious relic perception (Rushdie, 2016). However, irrespective of the changes from holy to secular, the prophet's hair continues its miraculous work.
