Note: You must be logged into the myEdison portal in order to access the databases listed above. You may also find the following link helpful as you conduct research throughout this course: Information Literacy for TESU Students.

Then, in a 2 page paper in APA or MLA format, identify three sources you would use if you were to write a paper on the topic.

Why did you select those sources? Talk your reader through each source and determine what makes each source a “scholarly” source and appropriate for an argumentative research paper.

Finally, discuss why database sources are better choices than Internet-based sources for an argumentative research paper.

Answer

The Relationship between Quality of Life of Children with Cerebral Palsy and Their Mothers' Depression and Anxiety

Barreto, T. M., Bento, M. N., Barreto, T. M., Jagersbacher, J. G., Jones, N. S., Lucena, R., & Bandeira, I. D. (2019). Prevalence of depression, anxiety, and substancerelated disorders in parents of children with cerebral palsy: a systematic review. Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology.

In their article, Barreto et al. (2019) endeavored to establish how parents of children with cerebral palsy are likely to develop mental illness. This article is applicable in trying to come up with a connection between the two key variables, namely the quality of life of children with cerebral palsy and anxiety and depression levels of the mothers. Since both parents play a role in the lives of their children, this article focuses not only on the mother, but also the caregivers, which prompted the researchers to look into the fathers as well. In this research they established that parents of children with the condition are more likely to engage in substance abuse and suffer depression and anxiety.

From the various pieces of literature they drew from, coupled with the investigation they carried out on multiple subjects, the researchers were able to draw relevant conclusions. Some of the elements they pointed out to were the socioeconomic and functionality level of the child, which they noted contributed immensely to the parents' mental disorders. Important to note, the situation operated in a linear manner, where one condition affects another, which in turn, affects it back. The article contributes to the research in various ways. For one, it proves that parents with children who have cerebral palsy are more likely to experience anxiety and depression. Secondly, it notes that too much time a parent spends taking care of a child leads to increased chances of mental illness. Lastly, it asserts that anxiety leads to impatience, which significantly affects children who have cerebral palsy.

Park, E. Y., & Nam, S. J. (2019). Time burden of caring and depression among parents of individuals with cerebral palsy. Disability and rehabilitation41(13), 1508-1513.

In this journal, the researchers delve into issues of caregiving in a family. The research is based on the premise that families with disabled individuals tend to experience increased psychological anxiety. In particular, they focused on the effects of cerebral palsy on parents in terms of financial and time pressures. From the study, it was evident that while there is no correlation between caregiving time and depression, an increase in pressure due to meeting deadlines and short time frames escalate the chances of developing anxiety (Park & Nam, 2019). The research contributes to the study by highlighting the need to focus on parents that have high time pressure as opposed to those with higher caregiving time.

Given the multiple sources from which the researchers drew their study, coupled with the methods they used, which included ANOVA and t-Tests, it suffices to state that the material is relevant and credible for the purpose of the current research. It will help in informing the research about the time factors as critical contributors to anxiety among parents taking care of children with cerebral palsy. As well, the other aspect that the article highlights, which is critical to the current study is the stage of the child as a contributing factor to the severity of anxiety in the mothers.

Amidst the various sources sought, it was imperative to come up with one that bases on a current situation case. In the research, Power et al. (2019) based their study in Bangladesh to look into how parents of adolescents with cerebral palsy cope with the challenges of mental retardation. Focus was put on anxiety, stress, and depression among the parents, and by extension, how the situation impacted their ability to undertake their caregiving roles. Using the Bangladesh Cerebral Palsy Register, the researchers carried out a comparative study on caregivers of children with and those without cerebral palsy. They established that the caregivers of adolescents with cerebral palsy stood at a higher risk of stress and depression than those without the condition. This source is critical in doing a comparative study of the two classes of parents.

Why Database Sources Are Better Than Internet Sources

The key areas that make database sources better than internet sources are authority, search features, relevance, and access to published information. Most databases typically have easy to determine sources that are scholarly or peer-reviewed as opposed to the internet where data comes from any source. Secondly, databases effectively focus information based on subjects as opposed to the internet, where everything is everywhere. Also, databases have multiple search features that enable one to filter information, thereby saving on time and relevance. Lastly, databases only have published information as opposed to the internet, where any hearsay is fed and ready for access.
