The Role of a Community Supervision Officer
A community supervision officer, commonly referred to as a probation officer, is a person who works with offenders by monitoring them to prevent chances of committing new crimes. They carry out and abide to orders assigned by the court with the major one being supervision and investigation of offender’s personal and criminal history before their sentencing (Clare, 2015). This paper seeks to discuss the steps I would take as a Community Supervisor Officer (CSO) in a case where a client could not find a job and at what point I would consider taking him/her to court to request a modification for not having a job.
A number of assessment procedures could be adapted in helping this client. First, I would evaluate the offender’s current performance capability in order to determine the nature of the job he or she could engage in before providing resources to facilitate his/her rehabilitation. The discussions on the available job options and programs will help monitor his working and adaptive progress in the outside world that could help in trying to find him a job. Conducting meetings with the family and friends of the offender is equally appropriate in allocating the most suitable jobs he could be assigned to facilitate establishment of reports on the client’s progress for purposes of court proceedings when assessing his suitability in case a revocation is needed. I would then document a current status report with regards to the client’s history that is documented in court to establish whether his case is suitable to be granted a better consideration. Of importance, I can consider talking to the prosecutor to seek if he could change the conditions of release. The argument line would be that the current ‘no contact’ order subjects a severe hardship upon the defendant because prolonged joblessness could lead him into committing another crime that could possibly throw him or her back to jail.
Probation or supervised release are different channels that federal courts employ in supervising individuals convicted of crime. Probation is an alternative to prison time. Modification is essential because federal courts can modify original conditions of probation at any point before the supervised period ends. In a case where the client is limited to access particular areas of work that the bond conditions did not outline, then I would consider taking him or her to request a modification or revocation for not having a job. In this case, the client will post a bail bond indicating his willingness to abide by all conditions. Modification of the previous bail conditions will necessitate filing of a motion with the court where I will help my client to document all prevailing conditions that we want changed and the reasons for the changes. After the motion has been filed, we will thereafter attend a hearing from the judge regarding our case to ascertain whether or not our plea was granted. Such a procedure will help my client with the necessary career trainings or education programs and other rehabilitative services that could make him a better person for future employment in various job firms.
