The Role Played by Wikis, Blogs and Websites in a Workplace
Knowledge is the most important asset and resource that works to achieve a competitive advantage over the competition in various organizations. That knowledge is acquired, shared and then utilized by the different individuals in the organization. Interactive knowledge management provided by wikis, blogs and websites are important in an organization as it brings passion and a human side to knowledge as a whole. (Chugh, 2017) Many organizations favor three stages of knowledge management namely; knowledge capture and or creation, knowledge sharing and dissemination and knowledge acquisition and application. All these processes are facilitated by the use of social networking tools such as wikis, blogs, and websites which have been used extensively in the education sector, for instance, for more than a decade now (Chugh, 2017). A wiki is a website or a group of web pages where anyone can add, edit or delete content. In the workplace, it is basically used to enable various individuals create and build knowledge bases on specific work-related topics that are beneficial to the organization. (Rankin & Shumack 2016). Blogs, on the other hand, enable employees in an organization express their opinions, thoughts, and feelings on certain products and offer suggestions that can be of help in enhancing the quality of the product. (Rankin & Shumack, 2016). Apart from a business environment, webs, blogs, and wikis have been used in other sectors such as education where educators create these interactive sites in order to facilitate communication between themselves and the learners. Wikis, blogs and websites have been beneficial to online learning as they provide both collaborative and cooperation as educators are able to interact with the learners to establish a network for publication and feedback between themselves. (Chugh, 2017)
