Answer

Analysis of The Sanctuary of School by Barry

Lynda Barry’s The Sanctuary of School is a narrative essay regarding Barry’s experience as an abandoned child and how she made use of artistic work to cope with her situations. Barry narrates concerning the time when she sneaked out of her house because of the depression and frustration that her parent brought to her homestead as a result of financial hardship that made both her brother and herself feel invisible (Barry 857). She leaves very early in the morning before daybreak to the only place she felt secure and warm, her school. More particularly, she goes to her classroom and Mrs. LeSane, her teacher. Barry finds security in the classroom in art and uses this skill and knowledge to assist her deal with her home issues (Barry 859).

In the essay, Barry is speaking to an audience that comprises public school shareholders. Possibly, the essay is meant for government organizations and institutions that have the obligation of budgeting for public schools, teachers, and students that are components of public school environments.

The essay’s main assertion is that public learning institutions have been abandoned along with the roles they play in bringing up learners who, in most cases, come from troubled families. Public schools’ budgets are constantly getting reduced, and their teachers are poorly remunerated (Miller 116).  With the budget cuts that characterize public schools, creative programs that are instrumental to the development and growth of most of the learners are cut off as well (Miller 119). Consequently, learners do not have avenues to turn to when they desire to escape the challenges they face in their families (Miller 123). The outcome of this is that learners are barred from developing their creative skills in music, drama, and art, among other creative skills.

From the essay, it is deducible that budget cuts for public schools ought to be stopped and teachers/instructors in these institutions are offered better remuneration for the huge role that they play in shaping learners’ lives, especially those from troubled families across America and the globe at large.
