Having studied “Theme for English B” and how it relates to Hughes’ life, you will now write your own poem that accomplishes everything Hughes accomplished in his.  You will call it “Theme for 9th Grade ELA.”  In this poem you will tell your teacher about you – where you’re from, what you  like, and how all of these things work together to make you who you are. You will write to define your identity, just as Hughes did. Your poem does not need to follow Hughes’ form exactly, but you should begin your poem just as Hughes did his:
