Answer
Theory and Variables
Predictive and prescriptive studies are approaches that are commonly used by researchers when conducting scientific research. Predictive studies focus on what is likely to happen in the future. On the other hand, prescriptive studies concentrate on improving the outcomes, providing suggestions on what should be done, and highlighting the potential results for each action (Bertsimas & Kallus, 2014). In an article entitled ‘patient’s Perception on Nursing Care at a Large Teaching Hospital in India’, Dikmen, Aksakal, and Yılmaz (2016) conducted a prescriptive research to find out if patients were satisfied with the nursing care they were receiving. The independent variables were the patients age and gender, while the dependent variable was the patients’ perception. On the other hand, the mediating variables were the quality of treatment received and the timeliness of treatment.
Independent variables refer to variables that are stable and not dependent on other factors. Dependent variables, however, are those that are dependent on other aspects and can be changed easily (Bertsimas & Kallus, 2014). In contrast, mediating variables are often used to link the dependent and independent variables. Identifying the three variables in a study is important because it makes it easier for the researcher and other individuals to understand how they are connected, what is being tested, possible outcomes, and the type of method to be used when collecting data (Bertsimas & Kallus, 2014). There are three recommendations provided in the article that are likely to improve healthcare delivery and patient perception on nursing care. First, the authors suggest that regular evaluation of patients’ perception to care should be conducted so as to identify any gaps within the system and sustain quality healthcare delivery. Secondly, Dikmen et al. (2016) recommends that healthcare providers should be trained frequently on ways to maximize patient care. Lastly, the article states that healthcare organizations should set standards that can be used to measure quality in healthcare delivery.
In conclusion, predictive or prescriptive studies can be used by researchers when conducting research. Predictive studies forecast what might happen in the future, while prescriptive research focuses on improving or changing outcomes. Additionally, there are three variables that are important in identifying what a study is all about, factors that may affect the outcomes, and the methods to be used in collecting data. These variables include the independent, dependent, and mediating variables. Independent variables are not affected by other factors and can stand on their own. On the other hand, dependent variables are not stable and rely on other aspects. Lastly, the mediating variables act as a connection between the dependent and independent variables.
