Research paper on Tomás Luis de Victoria and his Requiem mass “Missa Pro Defunctis” written in 1603 for 6 voices (not 4), which is a part of “Officium defunctorum” (Office of the Dead).
Start with a biography of composer, his importance and role in music and church. His most notable works and motets that were set to masses by him and other composers. Then transition to requiem mass and its history: King Philip II named Victoria the personal chaplain to his sister, the Empress Maria of Austria. After the death of Philip II, Victoria still followed the Empress for 17 years. When she died in 1603 Victoria wrote his Requiem Mass for the royal funeral. Victoria published his last work, the “Officium defunctorum” in 1605, where this mass was a part of with addition of ceremony music before and after.
Then, analyze mass by movements (Introit, Kyrie, Gradual, Offertory, Sanctus, Agnus Dei, and Communion). Talk about the length of note values, length of movements, texture, polyphony, homorhythm, and cadences, with particular examples from the score
