QUESTION

Unit 3 discussion 1

Types of Theory

It is anticipated that the initial discussion response should be in the range of 250-300 words. Response posts must demonstrate topic knowledge and scholarly engagement with peers. This is not the only criteria utilized for evaluation; substantive content is imperative. All questions in the topic must be addressed. Please proofread your response carefully for grammar and spelling. Do not upload any attachments. All responses need to be supported by a minimum of one scholarly resource. Journals and websites must be cited appropriately. Citation and reference must adhere to APA format.

Classroom Participation

Students are expected to initially address the discussion question by Monday of each week. Participation in the discussion forums is expected with a minimum total of three (3) substantive postings (this includes your initial posting and posting to two peers) on three (3) different days per week. Substantive means that you add something new to the discussion, you aren’t just agreeing. This is also a time to ask questions or offer information surrounding the topic addressed by your peers. Personal experience is appropriate for a substantive discussion and should be correlated to the literature.

All discussion boards will be evaluated utilizing rubric criterion inclusive of content, analysis, collaboration, writing and APA. If you fail to post an initial discussion you will not receive these points, you may however post to your peers for partial credit following the guidelines above. Due to the nature of this type of assignment and the need for timely responses for initial posts and posting to peers, the Make-Up Coursework Policy (effective July 2017) does not apply to Discussion Board Participation.

Discussion Question/Prompt [Due Wednesday]

Please read the following introduction and complete the following steps for your initial discussion post:

There are a number of methods for classifying theory in nursing.  These include classification based on range/scope or abstractness (metatheory, grand, middle-range, or practice theory) and type or purpose of the theory (descriptive, explanatory, predictive, or prescriptive).

For this week’s discussion post, address the following:

  • Identify one specific nursing theory that relates to your area of practice.  Feel free to go to the Currents website or look in your textbook for multiple nursing theories to choose from http://currentnursing.com/nursing_theory/(Links to an external site.)
  • Discuss the type of the selected nursing theory according to scope (meta-theory, grand, middle-range, or practice theory) and purpose (descriptive, explanatory, predictive, or prescriptive).
  • Provide an example of how the selected nursing theory can be applied to your area of practice.  The example should include core concepts of the theory and demonstrate its practical application.
  • Be sure to supplement your discussion with your personal and professional experiences.

Responses need to address all components of the question, demonstrate critical thinking and analysis, and include peer reviewed journal evidence to support the student’s position.

Please be sure to validate your opinions and ideas with citations and references in APA format.

Please review the rubric to ensure that your response meets the criteria.

Answer

Unit 3, Discussion 1: Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory

Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory was pioneered by Dorothea. The Theory is also referred to as Orem’s Model of Nursing.  Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory is classified as one of the Needs-Based Theories, which were developed by nurses who put forward the idea that nursing care should be given in a conceptual order (Gonzalo, 2021). The purpose of Orem’s Model of Nursing is considered prescriptive since it guides nurses as they help individual patients to fulfil their mental and physical needs. However, Needs-Based Theories such as Orem’s Model of Nursing are criticized for being excessively reliant on the medical model of health and for placing patient in an obviously dependent position (Wayne, 2021).

Orem’s Model of Nursing focuses on an individual’s ability to perform self-care so as to maintain their well-being, health, life, and health. Major concepts of Self-Care Deficit Theory include nursing as an art, humans (women, men, and children being cared for by others), the environment (chemical, physical, and biological factors), health (being functionally and structurally sound or whole), and self-care agency (Gonzalo, 2021). Self-care includes activities that people engage in to restore, maintain, or improve their health (Khademian, Ara, & Gholamzadeh,2020). Borji, Otaghi, and Kazembeigi (2017) define self-care as learned, effective, objective, and informed activities as well as behaviors of an individual performed in concrete situations of life, by an individual or their family. Khademian et al. (2020) state that Orem’s Model of Nursing can be applied to improve the quality of life as well as self-efficacy of hypertension patients. Besides, the Model can be used to improve health outcomes among diabetes patients (Borji et al., 2017). In clinical practice, I believe that patients can play an important role (self-care) in improvement of overall health outcomes. The theory can be of much relevance in rehabilitation settings and patients on follow-up.
