Use of Hypothesis Testing and Confidence Intervals in Health Care Research
Hypothesis is testable and testable statement on what an investigator predict the outcome of the study. Hypothesis helps to define the focus of the study. It is important for measuring reliability and validity of the research and in data analysis. Hypothesis must be tested; therefore, the parameters used in hypothesis should be measurable. It can also be conceptualized as a testable statement that gives an overview of the relationship between two or various variables, which include dependent and independent variables (Adhikari, 2020). Confidence interval is used in healthcare research to provide a range of plausible values for estimations of effect sizes or population parameters. Confidence interval is used to test if the parameter under investigation is a representative of the true population (Schober & Vetter, 2020). In the workplace a hypothesis can be used to predict the outcomes on a particular nursing intervention for example 2-hourly-rounding on improved outcomes and quality of care while confidence interval can be used to determine whether the sample size and research method provides valid, reliable, and significant results. In that way use of research hypothesis and use of the confidence interval will help the investigator to develop a focused research that is based on scientific methodology.
