Answer

Values and Attitudes Important for Human Service Professionals

Human services refer to a field of study that seeks to meet diverse human needs by applying interdisciplinary knowledge to prevent and remediate problems while simultaneously committing to bettering the quality of life of society. The ability to achieve these objectives is dependent on the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes exhibited by the human service professionals (Mandell & Schram 2020). It is upon this background that this paper evaluates values that are considered important for professionals in this field. It further reflects on how these values and attitudes relate to my role in the helping relationship.

Most Important Attitudes and Values for Effective Human Services Professionals

A human service professional needs to show attitudes such as empathy, competence and have cross-cultural sensitivity. Empathy refers to the ability for the professional to put themselves in the place or position of the affected person. Doing this ensures that the professional understands the feelings, thoughts and behavior of their patient. Showing empathy is one of the best ways to understand situations and provide viable guidance (Mandell & Schram, 2020). Second, the attribute of competence forms the basis for delivering quality services. Competence is backed by experience, knowledge and skills on a certain matter. It is necessary that human service professions are competent. Third is cross-cultural sensitivity. This attribute acknowledges that human services serve a range of customers from diverse backgrounds and thus, professionals in this field need to nurture their cultural competence skills.

In addition to these three attitudes, a human services professional will need values such as self-awareness and patience. Self-awareness means having conscious knowledge of personal feelings and character. This value enables a person to reorganize themselves, especially when faced with a difficult situation that requires personal transformation. Self-aware human service professionals are problem solvers because they are composed. Patience is the tolerance towards suffering, problems and delay without getting annoyed (Mandell & Schram, 2020). Given that human services target human beings, it is important that the professional is patient when dealing with diverse groups of patients. Some might require the practitioner to be tolerant towards their behavior. These sets of values and attitudes lead to successful and satisfied human services professionals.

An evaluation of the identified values and attitudes shows that I possess empathy and self-awareness. Looking into the future, I would want to develop competence and patience. Competence arises from mastering new knowledge, skills and experiences. This makes a person knowledgeable on how to solve problems. I might develop competence by engaging on the job training and learning, participating in workshops and new projects, attending training seminars, engaging in digital learning, undertaking web research and joining expert groups (Neukrug, 2016). On the other hand, I might want to nurture patience. According to Chenoweth and McAuliffe (2017), this value can be developed by understanding that anger, outrage and irritability are addictive and should be avoided at all costs. Second, I will need to upgrade my attitude towards pain and discomfort. I will engage in activities that make me uncomfortable and cause pain so as to learn how best to handle disappointments. Neukrug (2016) emphasizes the need to practice emotional intelligence. He argues that being patient begins by having strong understanding of personal emotions.

In conclusion, this paper identifies attitudes and values that are important to human service professionals. The most important values include; self-awareness and patience, while attitudes are; as empathy, competence and have cross-cultural sensitivity. Looking into the future, I might need to develop patience and competence. This will enhance my effectiveness in delivering human services.
