Violence in the Workplace

            Workplace violence is a factor which can be prevented through effective policies and adequate preparedness (Cavaluzzi, 2020). Violence in the workplace, stemming from disgruntled colleagues, can be experienced in different forms such as mass attacks and mass shootings, and hence suggesting the drastic impacts likely to follow in such cases (Cavaluzzi, 2020). The statistics associated with assaults, injuries and fatalities in the workplace are discerning. Notably, 458 fatalities were reported alongside 18, 400 injuries due to the assaults reported in the workplace in 2017 (Cavaluzzi, 2020). With this, it is clear that the shootings in the workplace and the pattern associated with the violent acts in the recent years have proven to be alarming, and hence calling for adequate remedies to be implemented. Despite this, the law has failed to offer adequate guidance on how to curb the workplace violence against the staff. However, the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) provide the employer with a duty to safeguard the employees from hazards threatening their safety. Moreover, firms should be more cautious and proactive to avoid cases of negligence that makes it easy for workplace violence to persist (Cavaluzzi, 2020).

            I have learned several concepts from the article which I can implement in the workplace as a manager. For instance, I have learned that despite the existence of law focused on preventing the health of the employees, a limited guidance exists on how to prevent workplace violence. I would apply this point in the workplace by devising stringent policies speaking against violence at work since the law fails to accomplish this functionality. Moreover, I also learned that it is my duty as an employer to safeguard the safety of the staff as guided by the OSHA. I will implement this information by notifying the Division of Consumer Affairs on any aspects of incompetence associated with staff safety to discourage violence. Also, I learned that it is my duty to remain cautious to avoid instances of negligence. I will implement this consideration in the workplace by employing fulltime guards who will reinforce the security of the staff in the workplace.
