QUESTION
Week 9 Notes
For this assignment, your task is to submit informal reading notes that highlight elements of the text that were compelling, confusing, thought provoking, etc. The notes are not synopses or plot summaries. The format and length are entirely up to you; and by extension, what you focus on is also entirely up to you. At minimum, each week’s notes must include two questions related to the text that emerged for you during your reading experience. The main point of this assignment is two-fold: to demonstrate that you are completing the reading assignment and that you are engaging with the course materials in ways that extend beyond merely completing an assignment.
Please listen to the lecture audio and read the document and then provide the notes. Please do not forget the two questions!

Answer
Welcome to our Hillbrow
The novel by Mpe (2001), is quite interesting and inspiring. While reading through it there are various elements of the text that were compelling, confusing and even thought-provoking. The novel features a story that covers the journey of two main characters; Refentše and Refilwe. As they progress through their journey, their choices can be analysed to derive meaning for the text.
Towards the end of the novel, Refilwe returns home to Hillbrow from England (Mpe, 2001). However, while it was initially emphasised as “welcome to our hillbrow,” it is now referred to as “Welcome to the world of our humanity.” This is a thought-provoking change since the story has now evolved from a focus on Hillbrow, to a focus on the world as a whole. Does this mean that the problems being experienced here are also common for the world as a whole? Hence, it triggers thoughts on which issues are common for in the novel, as well as in the communities today.
The most confusing element of the story relates to the opening of spaces, whereby specific issues may be taken to mean different things. These spaces are what people need to incorporate in order to influence their life’s choices. Unfortunately, the main characters, Refentše and Refilwe are only seen to be love interests (Mpe, 2001). They do not share a common story. Thus, it leads to the question, how did these characters create spaces which influenced their decisions? It is difficult to personally relate to their experiences wholly.
Lastly, the text is also quite compelling since it reminds the readers that meaning is never final. It will keep changing depending on what the people experience in their personal spaces. Hence, this transformation is important even in the day to day lives of individuals as it promotes the idea of change. This will encourage physical and emotional growth throughout one’s journey of life.
