Answer
Questions Based on Emotional Intelligence
Morton (2012) defines emotional intelligence (EI) “ability to recognize, manage, and control emotions”(5). However, the author does not define the concept well because he fails to state how emotional information is used to guide both thinking and behavior.
The definition of EI by Morton (2012) is similar and different to definitions offered by others. For instance, according to Alegre (2011), EI is “the ability to attend to, understand, and regulate emotions to guide thought and behavior” (56). However, Cherniss (2010) asserts that EI is “the ability to perceive and express emotion, assimilate emotion in thought, understand and reason with emotion, and regulate emotion in the self and others” (110). Elsewhere, McCleskey (2014) defines the concept as “the ability to perceive accurately, appraise, and express emotion” (77). These definitions are similar to Morton’s because they center on ability of EI to recognize and express emotions. However, the definitions by other authors are broader.
According to Morton (2012), EI is one of the variables that predict effective leadership because the different EI models can be used in predicting leadership success and the effectiveness of leadership.
The three points that Morton (2012) makes about the relationship between leadership and EI are that EI is a pivotal skill for an effective leader. Additionally, emotionally intelligent leaders motivate optimal performance. The third point is that EI can be used to predict leadership effectiveness.
Although Morton’s definition aligns with the definitions offered by the three other authors’ definitions of EI, his definition is very shallow. It should have gone further to explore the concept of EI.
Of the four definitions, the best for my understanding of EI is Cherniss (2010) definition. The reasoning is because such a definition is broad and clear as to what EI entails.
