Who is the Speaker of Homage to my Hips?
Before one can fully understand the purpose of a poem, it is important to first analyse who the speaker is. According to the description given, it is evident that the speaker is a woman with characteristics that all women dream of having. From the choice of words, it is evident that she is a confident individual who is not embarrassed of her looks. Hence, the speaker represents a confident woman who knows what she wants, and knows what she needs to do to achieve her goals.
Although the speaker is a confident woman, it is clear that she also understands that there are certain labels that others may use to try and make her feel self-conscious. For instance, although she accepts that she has big hips, she also acknowledges the fact that the word “big” is not often used kindly. However, that does not affect her because of how she has embraced her body. Therefore, it is clear that the speaker is someone who understands how the society perceives the body image of a woman. There are some body types that are considered attractive, while others are criticised. Fortunately, the speaker is not bothered by what the society may prefer.
The speaker seems to be a woman who knows her strengths and how to use them to her advantage. This is evidenced by the fact that, after stating how big her hips are, she starts indicating how she uses them to portray different outcomes. For example, she argues that her hips are powerful, magical, and can even be seductive when she wants them to be so. Hence, she understands her body, and knows how to manipulate it to her advantage. She is not interested in her looks, but by what she can do with it. This shows that she is a woman who enjoys taking action, rather than feeling sorry for herself. Since she cannot change her appearance, she works on changing the impact that her body has on her surroundings.
In conclusion, the speaker is a confident woman who has fully embraced her body. Although she knows that she may not look perfect to many people, she prefers to work hard so that the same body that is trying to make others look down on her, will be her source of success. She knows that she can do so much, and achieve a lot with the help of her body. She just needs to understand how she can better position herself to ensure that all benefits are enjoyed.
