Andrew Jackson: A Dueling Man, King, or Something Else?

Andrew Jackson or Old Hickory, was more than just the seventh President of the United States. His life was shaped early on by many trials and his ability to rise up and fight to the top is the most endearing quality many remember him for. Many would call him "scrappy" and always willing to defend what he believed in. This served him well in the military and in his personal life, but also led to the suffering of many groups during his time in political office.

Beyond the common knowledge of Andrew Jackson of Old H…, lays more than meets the eye.  He Born March 15, 1767 in a family of three, in the then Waxhaw settlement after the death of his father. His mother had, therefore, to move with them to her Crawford relatives where Jackson schooled in one of the local schools for elementary education and little higher education. This paper digs deeper in the prep residential life of Andrew Jackson and what really formulated his personality.

North and South of Carolina were prone to conflicts which matured into revolutionary wars from Which Jackson lost most of his immediate family members. The war in Carolina was violent with brutish conflict of ambushes, massacres, and sharp skirmishes. Jackson’s eldest brother, Hugh, died of heatstroke after he was enlisted in a retaliatory conflict at Stono Ferry. Although Jackson and his second brother Robert were young, they were involved in fighting American irregulars. Later in 1781, they were captured and put in prison where they contacted small pox from which Robert died. Their mother also died while trying to save her nephews from British prison ship.

Jackson was lucky, and escaped from the war regime and became a teacher for a while at the age of 15 but stopped teaching to study law in North Carolina. He was later admitted to the bar in 1787 where he served as public prosecutor in Mero District. He thrived well from his legal practice and started various business ventures from which he acquires land and slaves alike. He later married Rachel in 1791, who had earlier divorced her husband Robards. Jackson grew in love with his while in the same breath as he did in politics, soothing attributed to his strength of character. In 1795, he was elected delegate to the state constitutional convention as a congressman and later senator. A year later he resigned from the senatorial position and became Tennessee’s Supreme Court judge. It from this position that he challenged Governor John Servier and their controversy grew into a duel. Gorn notes,

“Crude and self-reliant, Jackson had s firebrand personality, boldly challenging adversaries to dues and once he killed a man to protect the honor of his wife. Jackson achieved national fame as a military general, self-made man and champion of the underdog.” (122).

In general terms, Jackson had grown strong in character, sharp in mind, courageous in his heart but also of volatile temper. These attributes are linked to Jackson’s childhood experiences which are believed to have hardened him and made in resilient in all odds.  As can be noted in his voice, replying to his uncle in charge of the American Army when he threatened to chastise him,

“..that I had arrived at the age to know mu rights, and although weak and feeble from disease, I had courage to defend them, and if he attempted anything of that kind, I would most assuredly Send him to the other world.” (Hollits 214).

He was brave, smart, and dangerously violent in war and would later resign from his judgeship position to lead to command militia against British, the Indian tribes, the Spanish abettors in Florida and Mexico and he overcame. He was later commissioned as United States’ Major General in May 1814 and became the second most honored people in US after George Washington.

Jackson contested for US presidency twice. He narrowly lost the first contest to John Quincy in 1824 but merged the president elect in his second contest, beating Adams in 1829 after which he served the presidency until 1837. His presidency was characterized with both legacies and dictatorship. He remained a firm supporter of state’s rights and slavery’s extension but opposed the wig party and congress on diverging issues like the Bank of the United States. Jackson presidency was a unique one, being the first to shift epicenter of political power and control from East to West. His strong personality was something which he carried to the White House. He tackled issues of concern head-on for example the opposition of re-chartering of the Bank of the United States, battle against the South Carolina Legislature among others (Jackson, Andrew, et al., ).

In your last paragraph below, you need to follow instructions, instructions state:

In the final paragraph, you need to make your own judgement about what kind of person you think he was and also what impact or lasting impression he made on the United States.

In a nutshell, Jackson’s childhood, teenage experience, law and military experience shaped him in a strong, fearless, smart and authoritarian personality. He grew up knowing what bad leadership meant to the disadvantaged and thus stood firm for what he believed was liberty to all.
