Summary of Results – Clark Healthy Workplace Inventory

From the Assessment, it was discovered that:

  • The nurses and physicians interacted confidently and respectfully
  • The communication among the nurses themselves was characterized with a lot of respect and civility.
  • The interaction among the physicians, nurses and patients demonstrated restraint and calmness, even when there were apparent differences.
  • Differences that were evident among the stakeholders within the facility were solved without resorting to personal attacks and name-calling. They were calm and respectful
  • Civility is encouraged by policy and rewarded annually for its contribution to provision of quality care

Identify two things that surprised you about the results. Also identify one idea that you believed prior to conducting the Assessment that was confirmed.

First, I was surprised by the civility demonstrated between the physicians and nurses. I had always assumed that this interaction would be characterized by feelings of superiority on the side of the physicians and they would tend to direct than engage the nurses on a horizontal manner. Their respectful and civil interactions shocked me.

Secondly, I was surprised by the manner in which the healthcare providers chose to remain civil when confronted by uncompromising patients or relatives despite the fact that these workers had already worked for hours without taking any rest. Some of them were even on mandatory shifts but chose to remain calm and respectful. This restraint tended to deescalate situations much more easily than the few confrontational interactions.

What do the results of the Assessment suggest about the health and civility of your workplace?

The results of this Assessment demonstrate that my workplace has institutionalized civility measures and respectful interactions within its ranks. Because of the obvious risks of disagreements between physicians themselves or even the healthcare providers and the patients, the adoption of strategies that improve civility and improve the quality of care is more than necessary (ANA 2015). The conflict resolution mechanisms that are adopted in my workplace help to relieve stress and tension both for the workers and the patients. The strategies that are adopted by my institution have helped to improve the confidence of all involved, improving the communication between various levels and ultimately leading to an improved care delivery.

Briefly describe the theory or concept presented in the article(s) you selected.

Explain how the theory or concept presented in the article(s) relates to the results of your Work Environment Assessment.

Clark (2019) addresses the manner in which disrespectful and uncivil behaviours in healthcare environments can have detrimental effects on patient safety by exploring how these behaviors can lead to life-threatening mistakes and complications that would otherwise be preventable. It Advocates for a culture of civility and respect in healthcare.

These concepts relate to the civility results that I assessed in my workplace. The conclusion that there is need for civility and respect within the healthcare environments to improve the quality of care is consistent with the implications of the results that I found within my workplace where respect and civility contributed to improved patient outcomes.

Explain how your organization could apply the theory highlighted in your selected article(s) to improve organizational health and/or create stronger work teams. Be specific and provide examples.

The organizational health can be improved by implementing policies that encourage improved communication between the healthcare workers themselves and also between them and the patients (Adams and Maykut 2015). The nurses for instance ought to be integrated into the multidisciplinary system and approach to treatment where the care services they provide are not seen as subordinate to the work that physicians do but as complimentary to the efforts. Practical problem-solving methods in which respectful and calm conversations between conflicting parties are encouraged should be prioritized. The organizational management ought to come up with better ways of motivating civility for instance by identifying the “Civil employee of the Year” so as to encourage others to enhance civility.

General Notes/Comments

-Respectful conversations lead to employee motivation

-Civility at the workplace lead to improved quality in healthcare delivery

-Civility and respect are essential aspects of every workplace
