Case Where DNA Evidence Exonerated an Accused Person
One of the recent cases where DNA evidence successfully exonerated an accused person from continuing to serve a prison sentence is that of Rafael Ruiz. Specifically, after spending 25 years in prison, Ruiz was exonerated of rape and other sex assault charges after a newly tested DNA from the assault kit of the victim excluded Ruiz from the commission of the crime (Carrega, 2020). His previous conviction had been based on a mere description of a man named “Ronnie” who; according to the victim, was her attacker. I feel that this exoneration is the right thing because DNA evidence is now being used to ensure any injustices done in the past are reversed. For instance, Ruiz had spent the first half of his life in prison for a crime that he was not responsible for. As such, I feel that the exoneration is the right thing in ensuring justice for the accused person. I feel that even without the DNA evidence, there was not enough to convict Ruiz for the offence of sexual assault. My feeling is that a mere description of a person without showing any DNA evidence as to the commission of the crime is not enough to put a person behind bars. The evidence was a little bit shaky because it was merely a coincidence that Ruiz matched the description of the attacker that the victim gave (Carrega, 2020). Ruiz should never have been put behind bars in the first place. I feel that the decision of the trial court was a miscarriage of justice. Nevertheless, his exoneration makes me happy that justice was finally served. DNA evidence has become a crucial tool in the criminal justice process.
