Facets of Process Philosophy and its Impacts on the American Government
The societal facets of ‘process philosophy’ greatly impact the development of American government policies. As defined by Alfred North Whitehead, process philosophy formulates a new way in which the co-creation of ‘in’ and ‘of’ creation can be considered (Taylor & Bovill, 2017). Process philosophy helps elude specific issues that lead to specific events in society today. Therefore, some facets of ‘process philosophy’ have impacted the American Government and American society. There are so many societal facets that can affect the US Government, including marriage, education, and family. Understanding the roles of the American Government on these facets and vice versa would help understand the influence these variables play in shaping each other and what the future holds for American Government policies as far as ‘process philosophy’ is concerned.
Family as a unit in society has evolved in regards to its impacts on the American Government. Society regards the family as one of the unchangeable social systems despite the constantly changing culture and chief values. Today’s senior citizens grew in more traditional family structures that support a government with conventional gender roles (Wilson, 2019, p. 157). With the growth and spread of same-sex marriages, government policies had to change to accommodate the individuals and ensure that family continues to grow. The government’s support for gay rights has increased votes among the young generation associated with homosexuality. The evolvement of family and its structure has impacted the ‘process philosophy’ of the American government policies.
Marriage is considered a sacred institution by both the US government law and the Christian leaders; hence people who come into marital union cannot be dissolved. The accepted marriage from a religious perspective is between a man and woman, and the federal law would not allow the marriage of the same sex under any circumstances. However, in the 1970s, society’s attitude towards homosexuality started to change. Sherkat (2019) shows that secretariat Protestants were against the support of civil rights for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people (GLBT), whereas the non-religious political leaders were supportive. Therefore, same-sex marriage was an insult to God and nature. With time, same-sex marriage gained popularity, and many states started to legalize the act except the states deeply rooted in religious values. Therefore, the gradual normalization of same-sex marriage can be used as an example of applying ‘process philosophy’ to the US government.
Education and its growth process have significantly impacted the American government policy over time. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the wealthiest and prestigious families had the privilege to access higher education, leaving most of the population to engage in agricultural and manufacturing activities that did not require extensive schooling. After World War II, the American Government decided to provide funds for young men to pursue college education (Rose, 2016). This was to boost the labor for a managerial class as the industrial world kept revolving, hence higher education access to more Americans. The government came up with Higher Education Act which allowed low-income households to acquire the education needed through education grants, which has rendered higher education no longer a privilege. Education’s profound process and growth have had immense impacts on the actions of the US Government.
While people might think that society and its cultural values have remained static, it is clear that things change by the day, and that impacts how the government operates and the formulated policies. Therefore, with the changing education, family, and marriage facets, the dynamic American government policies have to change to keep up with society. Process philosophy from a socialist’s perspective has influenced the US government’s trajectory and the formulated policies. Therefore, the government reflects the society as the activities as the change in society determines government growth and not the other way round.
