Discussion
Employees work hard to come up with solutions to problems within their scope of work. However, when they share these ideas with their bosses/managers, there is a likely chance that the superior will take credit. On the optimistic side, the stolen idea can readily get the management backing. On the flip side, taking credit for subordinates’ work means that the employee loses trust in the said superior and may create laxity and backstabbing working culture (Shellenbarger, 2018)).
According to Shellenbarger (2018), when the boss takes credit for an employee’s work, the employee is always tempted to confront them. However, most likely the boss will not agree to the allegations or even offer an apology. Thus, employees end up bottling the adverse feelings within and seeking an exit strategy from the organization.
The proposed and workable solution to the issue is to avoid acting rashly and in anger. The employee should then consult mentors on a possible solution to the issue so that they make informed decisions. In case they decide to follow it up, it is important to use a formal written communication channel to keep their evidence. The worker should also evaluate if they are recognized in other areas such as through promotion recommendations by the said superiors and how the ideas are stolen affect their career goals in the long run (Shellenbarger, 2018).
