Written Statement for Acceptance into the Medical Profession

Introduction

My aspiration has always been to work in the medical field and although I started my career in the financial industry, I am still passionate about working in the healthcare profession and I would love to take this opportunity to pursue my aspirations. I was born in the Island of Saint Vincent on 9 July 1961 and I migrated to the United States in August 1984 having worked as a high school teacher after graduating from high school. Since migrating to the United States, I took a job in the banking industry and have been working in the same industry for about 31 years. I rose to the position of Vice President/Manager during my years in the banking profession and I would like to apply my administrative and managerial skills in a management position within the healthcare profession. My two daughters aged 35 and 28 years are both working in the healthcare profession with the older one being a nurse and the younger one being a Physician Assistant. I have inspired my daughters to pursue careers in the medical field and I am currently pursuing a master’s degree in health administration in order to transition successfully into the healthcare profession.

My core motivation

I grew up in a poor neighborhood with minimal access to healthcare facilities, which motivated me to join the healthcare profession in order to help people in need of medical attention. I was planning to join nursing school when I got an opportunity to migrate to the United States and start a new life. I took this opportunity because I knew that my family would have a better life in the United States than if I chose to remain in Saint Vincent. Once I arrived in the United States, the only job that I could get was in the banking profession where I went on to climb the corporate ladder motivated by family demands. I had to take care of my young children and I had no time to invest in changing my career at the time. I pursued further qualifications in the financial industry where I did a BS in Finance followed by an MBA in the same field. This allowed me to provide my children with a quality life and ensure that they got the best education possible. However, now that my children are all grown up, I am in a position to pursue my childhood desire of working in the medical field. I believe that I have a lot to offer in this field, especially in a managerial capacity having worked as a manager in my previous profession.

Relevant work experience

As a manager in the banking profession, I managed multi-disciplinary teams working on diverse projects within the bank as well as with the bank’s clients, which gave me extensive managerial experience, and is directly applicable in the healthcare industry. I believe that my extensive and successful career as a manager in the banking profession has equipped me with leadership skills that can be applied within a healthcare setting. I have also pursued a Masters in Healthcare Administration, which I am about to graduate from in April 2016, in order to acquire further skills in healthcare management. I believe that my 31-year work experience in the banking sector coupled with my educational background and strong desire to work in the healthcare industry is enough to propel me to success in the healthcare management profession. However, this does not mean that I will not face challenges while transitioning into my new position in healthcare management. I believe that my tenacity and drive to succeed will enable me to overcome any challenges that I might face. I look forward to making a significant contribution in healthcare management despite joining the field a bit later in my career, as it is never too late to pursue the profession you love.

Career aspirations

The coursework that I have covered while undertaking my Masters in Healthcare Administration has equipped me with a crucial understanding of my role as a healthcare administrator. As a mature student, I have been keen to absorb the lessons learnt in class as well as the lessons learnt in the field while applying the theories learnt in class. I have excelled in the numerous case scenarios that we have covered both in class and in healthcare facilities and I look forward to my first job as a healthcare administrator. I aspire to be the best healthcare administrator within the organization that shall hire me by taking a systems approach to the activities within the facility, and looking for ways to improve the systems in place at the facility. I intend to work in collaboration with all the stakeholders within the health facility including nurses, doctors and other personnel in order to improve patient outcomes and address patient needs fully. I intend to revamp the services offered by the healthcare facility to its patients based on the identification of patient needs as well as strategic healthcare initiatives in order to provide the best services as well as wholesome treatment remedies to all patients. These initiatives shall require close collaboration between different medical and non-medical personnel and I look forward to the challenge of accomplishing these far-reaching goals within my new position as a healthcare administrator.
