Part 1: Understanding Ethics in Research

To understand the historical context that created the Belmont Report, watch this video: https://videocast.nih.gov/summary.asp?Live=11525&bhcp=1

Then, write a one-paragraph reflection of what you learned about the Belmont Report from this video.

Part 2: Read the Belmont Report

We are going to look at a primary document from the federal register, the Belmont Report. Read the Belmont Report (http://www.hhs.gov/ohrp/regulations-and-policy/belmont-report/index.html) and then answer the following questions.

  1. What are the differences among the three ethical principles listed in the Belmont Report (respect for persons, beneficence, and justice)? Make sure to provide a definition for each one, using your own words.
  2. You are planning to conduct a research project at an elementary school, and you are planning to conduct interviews with all the children in a third-grade class. Would this require Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval? Why or why not? What concept(s) in the Belmont Report apply to this scenario?
  3. Give an example of a situation when disclosing all the information about a study might alter the validity of the study. Explain what a researcher should do in this situation.
  4. Think back to the research study you created. What ethical considerations would you need to keep in mind, now that you are knowledgeable about the Belmont Report and the IRB approval process?
